I mean you don't see NEAR the vitrol for people who've divorced... or cheated on their spouse. They hold people like that up in high esteem. (As long as they're on their side of course). Or for murderers even. Another Christian I know said that H.H. Holmes could get to heaven--but a gay person couldn't.
usually those who are the most vocal against gay people are usually gay themselves.
And when people try to pull that marriage is only between 1 man 1 woman it's literally not.
Marriage it means 1 man many women and even then the bible doesn't state marriage is only a man and a woman only if
the interpreter the whole adam and eve story to make it look like that but its not.

I think the intent of the thread was not to wonder why homosexuality is such a hot topic now, but why Christians (I'd extend this to Jews and Muslims and other religions also) have such a targeted opposition (bordering on obsession) to homosexual activity in general. It isn't atheists or the non-religious making it an issue, it was made an issue millennia ago when so-called sacred scriptures prescribed the death penalty to those who had sexual relations with someone of the same sex.
These prescriptions alone set the table for thousands of years of accepted violence and persecution targeted at homosexuals. Only now in recent decades have people increasingly come to see how harmful and arbitrary these attitudes were. So no, I don't believe it's the non-believers who are making it an issue, it's the religious who have made it an issue for thousands of years, and such an issue that they were willing to kill over it. It's only starting to become a non-issue now.

Maybe the reason Christians are obsessed with gays is because they killed off all of the witches and they needed a new group to obsess over?

Good point. A faceless enemy is always useful to keep the rank and file scared; especially when they might be everywhere.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'

You know, the "love the sinner, hate the sin" people are actually worse than the out and proud homophobes. At least the people calling gays an abomination are up front about their hate, their prejudice and their need to discriminate.
The other crowd are just as bad, they hate gay people, they want to do them down. But for two reasons they cover this ugliness with a patina of faked concern, firstly because the pretence makes them feel good about their hate and bigotry, "I don't really hate them, just the stuff they are too weak to resist doing", and secondly to pile a layer of shame on the victims of their attempts to stop people from being who they are "...and if they are so weak, then they need help to ensure that they commit no more evil and damn themselves".
It's a powerful duology, the only problem being that we now know the abrahamic god is an evil and immoral apparition, created from the very worst depths of the human psyche, and in the words of Terry Pratchett "it is our duty to show that we are his moral superior".

I just realized I haven't heard much of anything from the Westboro Baptists in a while. I wonder if the death of their patriarch humbled them a little bit?

It gave them a little stumble, but it didn't stop them. Oddly enough, they were seen protesting Trump around the inauguration, which I think was because of his marriage history. This is why I don't live by the old saying, "the enemy of my enemy is my friend." No, they are most certainly not my friends. Honestly, they will protest anything that conflicts with their beliefs. Since nearly everything in the world seems to do that, I'm not surprised at anything they protest anymore.
What might actually be slowing them down more is the attention being shifted away from them. Attention is what gave them power.

Oh yeah. They protest everyone and everything. They think everyone who is not part of their little cult will go to Hell. Good news is they are nothing but a group of like 30 people who don't exist anywhere else in the world.
