I think the Hindus and Buddhist are probably closer.The root of evil is desire/attachment,which leads to suffering.

If you're talking about evil as in that which causes people suffering then there are multiple causes of suffering. Going further, if you are talking about people inflicting suffering on others then the main causes go something like this. Conflicting desires, disregard for others, incompetency, negligence, bigotry, intolerance, rage, callousness, etc.
