Experience of Atheists on Christian Forums
#21
RE: Experience of Atheists on Christian Forums
I've been a member of two Christian forums and had mostly positive experiences on both. The first, theologyweb, is one of those that is divided into theist and nontheist areas. I found that the treatment I received from staff was positive, but the attitudes of individual participants often tended toward the juvenile. If I were to draw any general lessons from my experience of Christian forums is that a lot of Christians have really shitty opinions of atheists in general.

And given what I remember of my own take on atheists as a pre-pubescent pseudo-xtian, I'm not surprised.  When I learned my uncle was an atheist, I was dumbfounded to learn that not every one knew (and so believed in) God.  Seemed like the most heinous act of ingratitude to me at the time.  Fortunately he was much beloved by my mother as well as the rest of the family (myself included).  I wonder what role, if any, knowing him played in my eventual 'fall from grace'.

Oh, and as to the OP my own experience over at Rational-whatever it is -William Craig's site- was shitty. Someone from there posted here a few years ago and I thought he conducted himself well. So I thought I'd engage in an impromptu exchange program with him. It was okay so long as I wasn't too forthcoming about what I actually think. Don't think I was vert confrontative but I did give as good as I got from the juvenile lot. I was banned.

Actually, joining a fundie one as a Christian and see how well I can fake it, that does intrigue me. I'd just be afraid that I meet people I actually like and then I'd feel like an ass for lying.

RE: Experience of Atheists on Christian Forums
I joined a Muslim forum because I had some question pertaining to some Muslim children that I frequently supervised, and I had to deal with a couple of guardians of the purity of the forum, but it was a mostly pleasant experience. They had some Muslim-only sections and I got into an argument with some clan Somalis once (my charges were Somali Bantu, a minority oppressed by the clan Somalis), but that wasn't really about Islam, more about the kind of canards oppressors typically hold about those they oppress; and several other Muslim posters took my side.

Since I wasn't there for general debate and got my questions answered early on, it's not a forum I visit anymore...it's been years.
I'm not anti-Christian. I'm anti-stupid.

Speaking as a Christian, Christian forums are boring. AF is definitely more fun. And I must give a BIG kudos to Tiberius. The format and functions of AF are the BOMB.

I was on a Christian forum, which had a number of good thinking people there. We didn't always agree, but there where a number of great discussions. Unfortunately administration was fairly liberal, and started believing that it was not loving to have a discussion or disagree with someone. I was unofficially banned for questioning the administration.... couldn't get a response as to why. They later invited me back, claiming it was a mistake; but by that time most of the good people left or where banned. What made it a good place was swiftly decaying, I wasn't interested.

The only Christian forum I have visited doesn't even allow atheists to post on most topics.

I generally don't have any interest in Christian forums because this forum already has a great community of theists and atheists, with great points from both sides. Christian forums are too one-sided.

I have not and never will join a specifically Christian (or other religious) forum.  Something general, sure, but not one intended specifically for one religious group over others.  I find doing so to be rude, just like having theists come to a specifically atheist forum.
There is nothing demonstrably true that religion can provide mankind that cannot be achieved as well or better through secular means.

Yeah, that would be the only way I'd be able to make myself join up. Trouble is I'd be so obvious. Which actually might be an advantage, now I think about it.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

Quite a bit of the success is due to the excellent moderation team.
