The leftover fragment needs to be a piece in its own right, IMO.

I have an ambitious idea - I could go for a three movement kind of structure. The above "Norm V3" piece would form the middle section. It both has a rather abrupt beginning which would make sense in this context, as well as a short finale which could be interpreted as leading into an energetic final "movement".
An improved and extended version of the fragment could form the beginning (without the speeding up part which was just an idea but doesn't fit here)

Heard a bit of a Mozart flavour in the middle of it, too.

Maybe because the arpeggiated chords in the left hand vaguely sound like an Alberti bass?

Yes, there would have to be some key changing. Which episodic section do you mean? The "fragment" goes to E maj towards the end and I considered running with that for awhile.

I consider the episode to be analogous to the instrumental break in a rock song, or the trio section in a march/trio or minuet/trio A-B-A structure.  I'd do something like theme, theme, something different, restating of main theme.

I stay the hell away from relative minor modulations. They invariably remind me of the bridge to a generic hair-metal song.

To see what you're talking about I just did some improvised dabbling based on the piece above modulating from C major via E major (0:22) to the parallel A minor (0:25), and noodling through the standard cadence a d E for a minute and then back to key C via the usual scheme. It doesn't exactly sound like hair metal yet

Nice!  In particular, the transition from A minor back into C and restating of the opening theme was seamless.  Definitely keep that one.
