I doubt she's trying to denigrate another culture, although I personally think she might do well to look up John Howard Griffin's regimen to prepare for Black Like Me, namely, taking Methoxsalen and spending 15 hours a day under a UV lamp until he could pass for black. That said, from what I see, the skin tone she went with looks like it could potentially have come from a tanning booth, and maybe without the headwrap, it might not come across as racially charged.
