I got the same. Considering the scope of the hack is an effective coin flip, I don't feel confidence that https://www.equifaxsecurity2017.com is the real deal.

Bothers me how they didn't do an Organization verified SSL cert nor does a WHOIS of the domain name tell you Equifax owns it.

I have zero credit cards. But then again, I also have already had a flag placed on my reports long before this ever happened. All three bureaus must notify me in the event that anyone tries to use my credit reports, social security numbers or anything else, to obtain credit. That is something that I have renewed every year, for my own protection. That and I also check my own credit reports free once a year, on my birthday (keeps it simple and easy to remember).

I don't have excellent credit, but what I do have, I don't want screwed up.

They already got my social and everything last year. Now have to subscribe to credit monitoring service. I was lucky and caught everything fairly early. Someone had to eat about $1400 though. They had eneough to open cards in my name.

I do think with what this is costing people and companies, that this is something that should possibly be a government service (credit monitoring).

Bad thing is, that you can't really get rid of your social security number.

Clearly, business as usual is not working. I don't know whether it needs to be a government service, but credit monitoring - and the ability to lock one's credit report - ought to be accessible to everyone. Frankly, the fees charged for those services are absurd and they're out of reach of lots of working people.

One thing for damn sure is there needs to be more independent oversight of Experian / Equifax / TransUnion and their data protection policies and practices. I don't know which fox is watching that particular henhouse, but I can say that the standards for my industry are pretty weak, and they are self-policing.

Credit monitoring and freeze/unfreeze should be free. But we can't have that in the jolly Robber Baron-infested USA, nope. Hand your wallet and bend over. It's for your own protection... and our bottom line.
