The #1 thing the NRA relies on is fear. Fear that the government is going to take away your right to have certain weapons, like assault rifles. So, the people drinking the Kool-Aid hurry up and buy more firearms and ammo before that happens (even though it hardly ever happens).
Again, these are people who genuinely believe that an armed populace is a polite populace, and that firearms are the only thing keeping the government from sliding headlong into abject tyranny.

In our times, with the threat of climate change and nuclear weaponry or whatever else, it seems like stockpiling some weapons in preparation for the collapse of society seems sort of reasonable.
I don't have any interest in owning a gun. But I know that I'm taking a bit of a risk, because if shit hits the fan, the people with guns are going to be in a way better position to survive.

Um no, it only explains evolution. It does not mean we have to rush to the end.
But that is what religion teaches humans. It teaches you you are so damned self important that you end up not giving a shit about killing others or destroying the planet. Because after all, you get a do over in your afterlife.
I am not that fucking selfish as to think the universe needs me forever.
