You sound too me, very much like a shady politician, who is talking about how much he is cutting taxes in this area, where he is raising them somewhere else.
I’m just looking for a straight answer.

I'm not Brain. I'm not as far from Brian as one can get on the issue of gun control, but I'm definitely on the other side of the spectrum.

Just to demonstrate how far I am from Brian these are the last six and half additions to my weapons hoard.

As a gun owner I'd be more than willing to discuss:

Registration of all firearms.
Universal background checks for all sales including private.
Improvements to reporting into the background check system.
Mandatory safety training for firearms owners.
Mandatory reporting of lost/stolen firearms.
Adding semiautomatic weapons with detachable magazines to a separate registry similar to the NFA registry but without the tax.

A compromise I'd like to see from the other side is the reclassification of suppressors from Title II to Title I firearms. I'm willing to give gun control advocates a lot of the things they have been asking for. Are they willing to give me something in return?

Things I will not support:

Bans.

Well.... I am Brian (though very far from that Brian).  I don't have any guns.  However I was raised around them, was taught to respect firearms, went through hunter's safety when I was in 6th grade. Shortly here roughly a million  firearms will be wandering into the woods, and I predict very few mass homicides (based on past experience).

I'm also not against compromise, I think that people do need to talk about it.   I can understand with some of the idiocy out there and such as we have seen there, that some are hesitant for universal registration.  However I also think there could be some protection in place for any type of mass ban as well.

I'd agree about the suppressors.

still described as active shooter situation, but reporting is the shooter is dead.

victims beyond those killed, too

You have no idea what I'm talking about, do you?

It would be hard not to since you repeat it on at least 3 forums on a regular basis. For the record though I'll throw out there that the 256 million number you keep throwing out there is probably a serious under estimate of the total number of firearms owned by civilians in the US. I'd bet money the real number is at least twice that because numbers on domestic manufacturing plus imports minus exports minus government purchases are a lot more accurate than WaPo surveys.

You want them sure, but don't hand me any crap that you need them.

Yep, just like when Billionaire Nick Hanoure says workers don't make enough on the issue of economics, on the issue of firearms, you wont even listen to the  inventor of a war weapon when his family says it was never intended for civilian use.

I could give one shit less what you want. We have had WAY too much firearm deaths in this country.

Your rights are NOT the issue. Your lack of pragmatism is. Your obsession is. Those are objects, objects are not living human beings. The 59 murdered in Vegas and the 29 murdered in the Texas church ARE HUMANS with rights. I find it sad you care more about protecting objects than the deaths caused by the use of those objects.

Yes, spray weapons and big clips SHOULD BE BANNED. But equally important, the makers of those products should be SUED for their vile marketing practices just like tobacco was forced to stop using cartoons to market to kids.

And you realize that until 2010 I was in the 3%, right?

BTW, I'm not in favor of bans either, as I've said repeatedly.

Bans only become popular because the laundry list you propose is infinitely harder due to a gerrymandered minority who states all and any regulations on firearms is to be opposed at all costs.

This, predictably, manifests in an ineffective culture war that sometimes ends with a specific sundry firearm component or assembly banned for a while. Then there's a chance the ban expires in law because it never was intended as a policy fix per se but to placate both sides for 5 years.

That said, nearly everyone I know in CA would settle for the list you wrote of things to discuss.

I want the Australian model - they have guns, regulations and training. An excellent trifecta.

But it will cost money. Sports enthusiasts and hunters don't bother me. It's the hoarders, paranoics and dubious "I need this gun for protection even though I leave it out in the open at home". If you're not diligent enough to secure your firearms and treat them with deadly respect, you shouldn't have one.

I feel the same way about driving.

Everybody in CA except House minority leader Nancy Pelosi, and Brian in Oklahoma.

You won't find any loaded or unsecured weapons at my house either. Just a laid back dog, security system and 3 locked safes.

I often wonder how these republicunt fucks can live with themselves but then I think of all that money they get from the gun nuts and I am sure that eases whatever it is that passes for a conscience with them.

I seem to recall that you have mentioned in the past that at one point you had several weapons including the 50 and possibly a cannon (I know we discussed old cannons once anyway...) and that you donated/loaned some/part/all of them to a museum/s. I don't know what your current status as a gun owner is. I also seem to recall uneducated redneck relatives you don't see eye to eye with politically and the mention of threats (maybe veiled threats) of violence from both sides.

In the meantime numbers...

256,000,000 guns x .5 = 128,000,000 in the hands of 3% of the population.
326,000,000 x .03 = 9,780,000
128,000,000 / 9,780,000 = an average of 13 guns each for 3% of the population.

or

600,000,000 guns x .5 = 300,000,000 in the hands of 3% of the population.
326,000,000 x .03 = 9,780,000
300,000,000 / 9,780,000 = an average of 31 guns each for 3% of the population.

Since some of that 3% own more than 13/31 guns...

[Image: gun_collection_charlton_heston_vault_insane3.jpg]

Some of the 3 percenters only own a few.

Frankly I'm a lot less concerned with the collectors that accumulate a few million dollars worth of machine guns and keep them locked securely in vault than I am the asshole with a Saturday night special and a history of domestic abuse.

If that's how you want to dodge the problem, that's fine. Just don't get grumpy when you get left behind.
