Yes, how is that not sociopathic? Yet it seems to be the sentiment of most people...

Sometimes I think that sentiment reflects the relief of the person watching that it wasn't he who fell in.  The laughter is is maybe a way to dissipate the alarm brought on by empathy through celebratory laughter that it wasn't you.

I don't think it qualifies as sociopathy, per se.  It appears to be a part of the normative human condition.  We find entertainment and humour in the trivial suffering of others because it isn't happening to us.  Think of the jokes you've heard that make you laugh - it's a fair bet that most of them involve suffering at some level.

But I think the main thing that keeps it from being a sociopathic behaviour is that we aren't entertained by all  human suffering.  We laugh when a little kid goes arsy-versy over the handlebars of his bike, but it stops being funny when we find out his arm is broken. We laugh at the little girl who forgets her lines during the school recital, but we don't laugh at the little girl with cancer.

how is it not sociopathic to fund an organisation that abuses millions?
tells lies about condoms having tiny holes making them useless
pays $4billion to silence victims
pays millions to protect abusers from victims suing them

seems empathy & sociopath to some is only for small incidents in front of their face

Hmm.. maybe
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

C/L I have been a long time contributor to a hockey forum and one of the most common complaints from the guys who consider themselves "purists" is about the wussification of the sport.  No more bench-clearing brawls.  Few fights.  Players getting suspended for big hits, etc.  So I certainly see where you are coming from.  I don't pay much attention to football but it seems to me that there are penalty flags on every other play which makes the refs more important than the players.  Much like the NFL the NHL is facing a lawsuit about the dangers of head injuries and the league's complicity in covering up the potential damage.  Much like the NFL they are going to have to settle.  They can't risk going to trial.

Still, in a personal mea culpa, when I was coaching freshman and JV hockey in the 90's I would constantly tell my players to "finish your check."  That means, in hockey parlance, that when a player is coming in on you and dumps the puck to a winger that the defender does not let him go and chase the puck.  Finish your check means "hit the guy and don't let him go around you cleanly and possibly get a return pass to break in on your goalie.  Doing so, and my son was a defenseman so he did this all the time, frequently involved crunching someone into the boards.  Were I coaching now I'd keep my mouth shut and hope my goalies were good at stopping 2 on 1's.

What they have learned about concussions and CTE should be enough to scare a lot of parents out of letting their kids play contact sports.  You don't have this issue in baseball and basketball.  For the record in 2015 the US Soccer federation banned "heading" for children under 10.  Apparently it is okay if kids over ten suffer brain damage!

I mostly watch basketball. And I get pissed when the 7'0'' Center throws the 6'6'' or smaller player to the ground when he's in the air, because he can't play defense.

I think a lot of comedians have very strong sociopathic streaks. People think they are 'joking' but I'm pretty sure a lot of what they say is real. If you listen to Carlin or Louis CK, they might as well be in therapy.

This is in regards to Mel Brooks' quote.
