The point is to produce more cells.  'A zygote is a gamete's way of producing more gametes.  This may be the purpose of the universe.'  - Heinlein

What about being a bunch of cells changes anything in there?  Use that in place of "atheists".

We're a bunch of cells who have -"yadda yadda yadda" to live for.  In short, everything.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

If we aren't created by chance, then too we die and are forgotten, so? what's the big deal about being forgotten after you are already dead?

Who says you have to care and love others? You are welcome to be a selfish prick and hug yourself... humanity as a whole doesn't care about your love life.

(January 4, 2018 at 5:10 pm)Mikeykitty123 Wrote: And no, saying that we need others to survive is not an valid answer. I don't care about surviving.
Believe it or not, we do need others to survive. And I don't care much about just surviving either. It's just that I love chocolate, and icecream, and a ton of other stuff, and I can't enjoy those if I am not alive, so despite my severe reluctance I have to keep surviving. But I couldn't enjoy those just by surviving alone, I can't cook, can't farm, don't know how to make any of the magical stuff that I enjoy so much, so I need other humans to make them for me. So these "others" are a necessary part of my survival.

I live life to enjoy life itself. I don't give a rat's ass about what happens after death. Hospitals and medicines should exist simply because I need to survive, and I already said why I need to survive. As for not accomplishing a single thing, that's quite wrong... I have accomplished a lot of things in my life... I learnt to drive, I managed to lose weight, I managed to gain weight again, then I lost it again, oh and I have several certificates of accomplishments from my school, college, and the places I have worked at, I've made friends, pissed off enemies, won mafia a few times, and a lot's more....

So what you are saying is if there isn't an afterlife with a wondrous reward for managing to live from birth to death, then life isn't worth living at all?  Nature, human relationships, life experiences, none of these have any value?  Because the planet and the solar system and indeed, our universe will someday die, life isn't worth living?  Sad, so sad.  You're either a troll or you need to run directly to a good therapist.

First of all we're not just cells, we are very special because, as a thinking and creative life-form, we are one of the most fortunate collections of atoms in all the universe. Look up at the night sky and feel that we are part of it, made of stars.

Also you think that atheism claims that we are all alone and we don't need anyone, should care about ourselves and nothing else; but did you made all your clothes, food you eat, your furniture, entertainment, computer or did you have other people make you some of those stuff? And as banal as it seems that's what we do to survive. You do what you can and other people do what they can. And also people are social animals. You do stuff because it's your duty (work) and other stuff (like laughing, being with friends, going to theater) because it gives you pleasure. Now, why altruism exists is bit complicated answer but it's there, nothing supernatural about it.

You could say biological meaning of human life is to procreate, but since we are intelligent we can overcome those reasons and enjoy in discovering nature, or humor etc.
For instance you have sharks that live like you describe: live by themselves. In fact they are so anti social that they have problems even with finding mating partner so that females sometimes even use parthenogenesis.

On the other hand I don't see that religion gives any meaning to life only to death.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

RE: Life is nothing
The point of life is to live. I'm reminded of the man who can't enjoy his food because he can't get past the idea that it's all going to wind up in the toilet.

What is the purpose of hating atheist when you're the one who thinks your life is pointless? If we agreed with you, would you love us? Like Boru said, this is odd since I know many atheist here who love themselves some Rhonda and I love them. All of them can survive perfectly well without me and vice versa, but love doesn't have to have a point. So you hate us because you're the one who isn't capable of love.
The god who allows children to be raped out of respect for the free will choice of the rapist, but punishes gay men for engaging in mutually consensual sex couldn't possibly be responsible for an intelligently designed universe.

I may defend your right to free speech, but i won't help you pass out flyers.

The point is whatever you make.

Several reasons, you're alive because two people cooperated and lived together to raise a child (if you come from a normative family) or an institution that took care of you. Someone took care of you so you could live from infancy to an adult.

You're wrong. Survival is the only factor for continuing living and passing on ones genes for each individual. For social animals, cooperation is a big thing, from just 2 parents to a whole cohesive society. That takes a lot of value and caring about others than oneself. The antithesis to your statement is that medicine "and things" do exist, because people did care.

Every drop in an ocean matters, because what is an ocean if not a collection of water drops. We bother because if you want it or not, you have, by just existing an impact on the world. You consume food and energy, you take up space, you spend time on an Internet atheist forum complaining, stuff matters if you realize it or not.

For me, I just live from day to day and try and make the most of what situation I'm in; which right now is replying to the OP. Why? Because I can, and because I want to.

That's a banal take on how the Universe is structured. Yes, we all are mortal, but our path throughout life is not a linear one to death, we cry, we laugh, we have mountains of experiences throughout a whole life. When it's gone, it's gone and you won't be around to complain that it is gone, because you'll be gone as well.

For me that means I should make the most of what I got, if not only something of what I got and what cards I've been dealt in life to do and contribute to the rest of society and my immediate environment.

Atheism has nothing to do with any of this nihilistic tripe you're spewing - it's merely a position on a single question: the lack of belief in the supernatural.
