Remember that ring in the Lord of the Rings? Yeah, something like that.

My preference is to see 'moderates' challenged by their stricter brethren than by our atheist ilk. They've had a taste of 'Christianity Lite' and going back to the hard stuff ain't going to happen -and- those stricter brethren types for the most part, as we see everyday on the politic/news channels, are themselves under going a big sea change (read that as, GASP!, liberalization) and are amenable to the "Christianity Lite' message themselves.

All the meanwhile the bell shaped curve of religiousity is edging towards the disbelief axis.

Bwa hah hah hah !!!

I'm not afraid of you or your none belief, there is nothing to be afraid of, your just a human that has no more power over me than an ant and a biting ant may just have a bit more. the only difference is I can step on the ant.

I think a human being has more power than an ant . And a human can have great deal of power over another .

Only if they allow such a thing to happen. I was speaking for myself. I know there are those who fall to others and i'm sure there are many different reasons.

Weather one allows it or not power dynamics always exist .

Yeah I seem to remember reading in the history books about something call "slavery" where thousands of people "allowed such a thing to happen."

Brutality and control of some humans by others are brute facts of human existence. Those of us who aren't eagerly waiting for the next life try to fix the problem in this one.

They might use it as a guide, but to a lesser extent. I've noticed that many of them get very defensive if you tell them they should leave their faith. When I say defensive, I don't necesarilly mean violent or mean, some are both polite and defensive at the same time. Maybe they're not expressing it out loud, but they seem scared to me. Also, they get nervous if someone close to them wants to leave their faith.
I'm talking about religious that don't believe in eternal punishment. Using religion for comfort and not wanting to leave it is one thing, but being afraid of atheism is too much. They have the Right by law to have a religion, then why are they nervous if someone disagrees with them? Why are they nervous if someone close to them leaves the faith? Do they think that the said person will be unhappy? How do they know that the said person is unhappy? And if the person can't resist without religion, they can return to it whenever they want.
I get why fundamentalists are afraid of atheism, but why are some moderates too?

Because, they are afraid someone has found a good enough reason to leave, which means it could happen to them. They don't want to risk losing their precious coping mechanism.

This occurred to me upon reflection:

Slackers know they are slackers. By over reacting with horror aplenty at the mere presence of an atheist they are trying to put on a good show for God (and themselves) despite their doubting nature that makes them slackers in the first place.

They doth protest too much.
