For me it boils down to my moderate religious grandmother thinking I'm not going to get into heaven. Even though she knows I'm a good person. She believes you can't get into heaven just by being good (It would make christianity and the bible completely obsolete otherwise), so she thinks atheism causes good people to go to hell.

I would remind your Grandmother that extremism in religiosity is no vice! And let me remind her also that moderation in the pursuit of religiosity is no virtue!
The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.

I do not feel threatened, why would you ask such a silly question when the answer is above. Let me clarify this, with the God of the universe on my side whom do I need to fear?

God loves those who believe and those who do not and the same goes for me, you have no choice in this matter. That puts the matter of total free will to rest.

Not necessarily whom, but more like what. Perhaps the prospect of fading away out of existence at some time in the future? You also sounded pretty aggressive there with the OP (who is, may I remind you, still rather young). Stepping on an ant? Why would you say such a thing in this context?

I believe extremism in anything is a vice. It's what leads to conflict and wars, doesn't it? Two or more sides refusing to budge, to the point that violence breaks out. Without compromise, groups of differing beliefs can't get along, even if they both make some decent points in one area or another.

My best guess is for most of those it is not nearly so much a matter of belief as it is of avoiding trigger words and subjects that might lead to unpleasant confrontations with family and friends.

Many Catholics (and probably other Christians and Muslims) do not even necessarily believe in God exactly, but still prefer to go through the motions if that is what it takes for a measure of mutual acceptance and cooperation to be established in their social circles.

I suspect that it is a very common thing among children.

They're afraid because when atheists express their opinions it's effectively us saying theists aren't entitled to their opinions!

God would never allow Christianity to fade away, He has a plan whether you like it or not and He will see that it is carried out to the very end. I said I could squash the ant to show I have no fear of anyone because with God on my side I need not fear.
