What is the purpose of life?  Like any animal we have a drive to survive but unlike most we know we won't forever.  Fortunately we have an enormous lifespan compared to most.  As we're always saying, we make our own meaning.  Leastwise we have to sign off on it, don't we?

Myself, I've always tried to embrace the absurdity of life, to resist taking myself too seriously.  I reject the notion that there is any duty to serve the mother ship of humanity.  Hey, our species is doing okay.  Doesn't mean there isn't any satisfaction to be found in serving others; that was a big part of the satisfaction in teaching.  It does inject a satisfying purpose to the day to day.  Now I don't have that but I don't feel empty or rudderless because of that.  Now my job is to read books that stretch me and eat & exercise to maintain a body that is sporty to move around in, and my joy is caring for my wife, dogs and garden. 

I know you've been building your career and abode.  You have also been working your aesthetic side.  Are you unable to do those things still or does it feel like there should be something more important/urgent to do?  I'm just flailing around now.  Wish I had something to say that would help.  Actually I have a recommendation for a book.  Alan Watts, The Wisdom of Insecurity.  If you'd ever like to Skype, it would be an honor.

Why the fuck was this speech not included in his proper four studio albums? I mean that bit about exploring space and feeding the hungry and clothing the naked with all the money we cut from defense spending  was  on Dangerous, but the rest of it just needed to be on one of the proper albums. It's just the best way to try and go through life. It's certainly more touching than my "life is a joke and its punchline is 'THE ARISTORCRATS!'" is, anyway.

My main purpose is to try to make the world a better place, to help vulnerable people and animals where I can, and to lead with an example I'd want others to follow in the future. Whatever small things I can do, I try to do.

I find concentrating on being there for others extremely motivating, especially as I stopped caring about living for myself a long time ago.

Have you told your MD's? Got a support group(IRL)? Considered grief counseling?

That's an important point. Helping others can add immensely to one's feeling of fulfillment about their life. I would highly recommend taking up some volunteer work. It is truly a life changing experience. You could volunteer to do something involving cancer patients and survivors and thus learn from other people who are going through the same type of ordeal.

I don't know, but do you go to support groups or have a therapist? Those can help, too.
