I tend to be wary of ideals. They're often just the stick which evolution uses to goad you into doing stuff.
Okay, but that goes for literally everything we do. We eat because we need to digest food in order to harness energy for our metabolic processes. We fall in love to procreate, pass on our genes and protect our young. Even being lazy is us not wanting to waste energy. Everything we do is a stick which evolution uses to goad us into doing stuff.
That's not just the human condition - it's the condition of all species on earth. I don't see what our origins have to do with what we choose to make of our future.
Quote:I believe in virtue and morality, but again see these as largely evolved drives, but in Kantian fashion, their reality in my head are too strong to ignore. At present I'm not working toward much of anything. I do like to think about interesting questions, and that seems to be the limit of my more earthly drives. That, and watching football.
This is certainly not what I want with my life. That my ambitions are in harmony with what I evolved to want, I see as a good thing, because as a human organism that's logically what's going to make me happy. I can't see what opposing the best aspects of our evolutionary origins has to offer.
