First and only picture of my one-hour pet.
Poor bastard flew into our window, while I was raking leaves, leaving it trapped in our boxed-yard. He could fly near the ground pretty fast still, but didn't manage lift off.
There being a lot of cats around, I spent a good ten minutes running him down and capturing inside this box.
It's a forest-pidgeon. I drove for half an hour to deliver him to the VOC a sanctuary for birds and other wild animals.
They told me (s)he was probably going to be fine. No blood in it's beak, no dilated pupils so probably no concussion, no obvious bruises in the legs or wing. The bird was a bit skinny and probably was still learning to fly. It wasn't fully grown and with the added panic and pain of having flown into the window, it probably just needed some time and feed to recover. They told me it was the right thing in bringing it, though. As it would probably have been killed by a cat. If I could catch it without it flying away, it probably didn't stand a chance to predators.
Funny though. Pidgeons annoy the crap out of me.
But an injured one struggles defenselessly in your backyard, and you can't help but help it and throw your entire schedule in dissarray to do so.
The bread was my gf's idea. She felt so sorry for it she wanted to give it something to eat. I'm glad it didn't, though. Bread's no good for birds.
