I still think getting a flu shot is directly linked to getting the flu

The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.

That’s fine, not everyone can take the flu shot, which is why it’s important for those of us who can to take it (herd immunity).

Please don’t use your own experience to persuade anyone else to avoid it though. For every person like you where it didn’t work, there’s thousands for which it did.

Precisely this.

I got the flu shot, and I didn't get the flu. Theory debunked! Big Grin

But, from what I've read after getting the shot, it doesn't prevent most strains of the flu, and it's not as potent as scientists had anticipated.

This year is an anomaly.

In truth, this is the first year I've ever decided to get the flu shot. The flu isn't something I typically get though, as far as seasonal sicknesses go. I don't get sick that often, but when I do, it's usually strep throat or something like that. Not viral. I wonder if some people are naturally more susceptible to the flu than others? Where's our resident doctor to answer my questions?

I have received the flu vaccine every year for the last 27. I have not been infected in all those years. I also am in direct contact yearly with infected people.

Otter! By what mechanism does a flu vaccine infect a person?

I think there is an idea out there that the vaccine is a live virus, and your body will have to actively fight it, but that's not true. So, many people fear the vaccine because they feel they stand a chance of coming down with flu symptoms. I confess, I used to be ignorant to the facts about this vaccine.

Right! Most vaccines are inactivated virus or of a recombinant DNA source. There is no way to become infected. It does take two weeks to gain immunity and it is possible to become infected the very day you get the vaccine. It is possible to contract a strain of the virus you were not inoculated with. It is possible the the vaccine did not impart effective immunity to you. No matter, the immunity you gain is as natural as the immunity you gain from suffering the infection. You just don't spread it to others.
