You science-y people can make all the claims you want.  I'm not buying them, because I'm evidence against those claims.

What of the possibility that the people who had their 'flu shots were later getting ill from a different strain of 'flu, for which the shot was ineffective?

I'd go with the preponderance of evidence, which is that the 'flu shots almost always work.
