IMO it's best not to try to force people to stand for a racist song that brags about killing people who dared to fight for their own freedom from the people who were fighting to keep them in slavery.

What I don't get, and probably similar to what Kit is getting at without the sexual innuendo, is that the way they kneel is still respectful because they all absolutely kneel in the same way and facing the same direction. Why not just sit on the grass instead, maybe in a circle, randomly off to one side or even stand up and mooch around a bit scratching their balls? That would make their point far more effectively I think.
Politicizing sporting events has a long and cherished history:

If you take away peaceful protest routes all you leave is the path to violence. Suppressing this sort of thing is how tyrants start. What's the benefit to patriotism, then? Yeah. There are two kinds of protests, that the constitution gives us the freedom of practice. You have to pick between peaceful and violent. Of course the historical tea party was violent, so I guess what these people really want is riots in the street.

The real danger is that one day people will simply stop caring and no longer support the system. That's what happened in the USSR. People simply said to hell with it. If people don't have a meaningful stake in the system then there's no reason for them to care about it. Trump is trying to make this a black/white issue because he's a KKK'er but it's really an issue that affects everyone. Once you start down the road of forced compliance you end up with a system like we had before, Jim Crow.
If I was in a situation where they played that racist song and I didn't stand and some nut physically attacked me for it I might go Old Testament on his behind, if not then certainly in the future. Does anyone really want to die for a racist song? Imagine having to stand for I Wish I Was in Dixie Land. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5OKdbc0DYpM
Simple solution: Stop playing the fucking National Anthem before petty sporting events. Why is football , not physics, biology, poetry, music, rational discourse the pinnacle of our culture?
