Heavy duty! I still want to re-read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance this summer. Had to buy a new copy because my old one migrated to some friend, but I'm getting ready to do some work on my Yamaha and the hot, still monsoon weather had me thinking of some of Pirsig's observations.

Hmm, where did you get that copy? I can only imagine reading it and muttering to myself, "Funny, I don't remember Tarzan of the Apes having so many drug references, latent homosexuality, and mugwumps in it."

I thought it was Edgar Rice Burroughs. I have read some of his works. Along with the works of Robert E. Howard, they framed part of my perspective on how masculinity was expressed.

LOL, on a very tangential note, have you read any of Augusten Burroughs' biographical work? Great stuff!

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down happy. They told me I didn't understand the assignment. I told them they didn't understand life.

I'd suggest starting with Perdido Street Station. Many of the books are connected in a way, but each is in a different genre (sort of). He is pretty unique, and his vocabulary has to be the best I've read.
