Quote:As we explained recently here at The Health 202, instituting work requirements in non-expansion states means the absolute poorest Americans, who are largely single mothers, would be caught in a catch-22 where working could earn them too much money to qualify for Medicaid, but not working would also make them ineligible for the benefits.
. . . . . . . .
The state projects the population who will fall into the catch-22 category and be eligible to receive the additional 24 months of coverage is only 1,280 people, or, by Alker's calculations, 2 percent of the parents or caretakers who have Medicaid. Alker said the administration's contention has been that Medicaid should be "preserved for the truly needy."
"That’s exactly who is hit by these proposals," she told me. "If they were to approve one of these [non-expansion states] it would really lay bare the hypocrisy of what they’re saying."

Surprise, surprise! Trump rolls out tariff on Canadian newsprint, due to have devastating effect on U.S. newspapers.
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/09/us/po...trump.html
Quote:As with Mr. Trump’s other tariffs on steel, aluminum, solar panels and washing machines, the newsprint duties will help some American manufacturers but hurt many other domestic companies.
A study undertaken on behalf of a coalition of printers, publishers and paper suppliers projects that American newsprint prices will increase more than 30 percent in the next one to two years, and that newspapers and printers will face an increased cost of roughly half a billion dollars from the remaining five American mills producing newsprint. The study was filed with the United States International Trade Commission, an independent federal agency that governs trade and could ultimately overturn or change the Commerce Department’s decision in a ruling expected next month.

Yet another deplorable decision by our resident stable genius. Did he even pay attention in Econ. 101 and 102? I find it hard to believe he could have.
As far as the tariff on newsprint goes, I'm sure the "thinking" went something like:
1) This will stick it to the fake news!
2) Fuck it. I don't read and neither do many of my supporters. No big deal.

Canadian government subsidized Canadian paper manufacturers, giving them an unfair advantage relative to US paper manufacturers.
US imposes a tariff on Canadian paper to level the playing field.
Why is that deplorable?

Well of course it isn't deplorable at all inside your tribal nation. But in the wider world community it is simply narrow, short sighted and mutually destructive. Can you explain to me again how Jesus stood for me-me-me-mine and distrust of the stranger, or do you just play a xtian on an atheist site for the yucks?

I'm a hell of a lot more concerned about the well being of what remains of our print news industry (especially at the local and regional levels) than I am with U.S. paper manufacturers. The increased costs will squeeze papers even more than they already are.

To really level the playing field the US would need to undo the arms buildup that has been unabated since 1950 and have given the US tremendous advantage in high tech via massive unparalleled tax subsidized R&D, as well as enormous economies of scale in critical export fields such as aerospace that were made possible by colossal tax funded military procurement over 70 years.
Otherwise the US needs to shut up about other people’s subsidies.

Trump does not like people to have more to read than he himself is willing or able to read.

It’s not racist to say a smaller percentage of black people can descend to levels of stupid comparable to those of a larger percentage of white morons typified by our friend Omega bitch.
