I was considering reading Starship troopers but figured it was not going to have the same satirical tone as the film. It's not so interesting listening to a genuine fascist espouse their views.

The movie was a satire rather suddenly, when the director caught shit for putting that name on his movie. 

The book is a sociological study of one possible way to engage the public in the running of a country. It ranks with "12 O'clock High" as a management training tool. I used both in the LMET classes. There's nothing of the book in the movie except the bad guys and bugs.

My personal opinion, is that the sci fi that falls between speculative fiction (Philip K Dick) and hard sci fi (Tom Godwin) -  sci fantasy, is unsatisfying because of it's insistence on using the sci fi hook as a plot point - and then failing to deliver any appreciable science.  In that sense, speculative fiction is harder sci fi than sci fantasy.  It doesn't matter how a scramble suit works, cargo weight limits are real and damning.....but star trek warp drives are fuckin magic....  

LOL.  I know..I know, the Trek Cultists are setting their phasers to kill. 

Iain Banks has been my most recent foray into sci fi. Haldeman, Heinlein, PKD, Chrichton were my introductions to the genre..laying aside those huge anthologies that you never remember any names from..and I think their stuff is still some of the best. Whoever wrote The Expanse is probably good..if the book is better than the shows (I'm assuming it is).

That's why I mentioned Niven. At the first Comic Con (I think it was) after it was released physics students were marching up and down the halls chanting "Ringworld is unstable!" So he sat down and wrote Ringworld Engineers.

Interesting. Why is it that you like watching sci-fi more than reading it? What is missing in sci-fi novels that would make them as good as sci-fi movies?

What do you think is a good adaptation of a scifi novel/short story to the screen? No wrong answers.

This is very good question because having written the first chapter well over 30 pages for my sci-fi novels, I still wonder if reading it would be as interesting as watching Star Wars and because many friends tell me that being so cool and 'epic', it could turn out into a movie and video game.
