At least the woman completed her purchase. I appreciate that American tenacity.

Have you done the numbers? Do you gain anything by getting payments for three years early?
Yeah, I get lower SS payments, but they start three years earlier. I am fortunate in having both a pension and a 401K, unfortunate in not signing on with this company until I was 36, but the SS should be a welcome bonus that I don't have to rely on. I plan to use the early SS payments to cover my insurance until I qualify for Medicare.

I had the numbers run when I retired at 62. I collected less SS benefits until I turned 65 last year, but the lines for the amount collected for each case cross over at 81 years old. I'll be surprised if I live to see 81. Given that only one male in my father's family lived past 58 (that one to 64) I started collecting my Social Security money earlier rather than wait. I could die tomorrow, for all I know. For example, I got clipped in a hit-and-run while on my bicycle. Just the handlebar, but could easily have been worse. Also, if the SSA goes under (unlikely, but still) I will have collected more of what I put in than otherwise.
If I had retired at 65 instead, my quality of life could have been way worse. I was pretty burned out.
