I hope that at least some Republicans will remember him, and choose to pick up the torch.
I was going to drop a Trump vid here, but it feels somehow inappropriate to do anything but express my condolences for the Americans in these forums who have lost a good man.
I am old enough to remember the hope of Reagan. I am old enough to remember the cold war, or at least the last days of it, which seem to have re constituted because of 45.
Reagan, in my eyes looking back, was well intended. Ron Jr who is an ardent democrat loved his father, but like me, looks back at it as a well intended man who got suckered.
Considering the not so subtle digs at 45 by both republicans and democrats whom attended, I don't think it would be out of line.
Even Meghan took a blunt swipe at "MAGA"" saying we've always been great.

"Greatness" is in the eye of the beholder.
I had issues with McCain but, if you compare him to what passes for republicunts today, he was head and shoulders above any of them.

Because 40% of America is no less crass, ignorant, superficial, anti-intellectual, egotistical, paranoid, lazy, avaricious, resentful of real dedication, suspicious of public mindedness, consciencelessly opportunistic, jingoistic and religious for feeling good only, devoid of any sense of irony, ungrateful, and craving of any confirmation however shallow and false, as trump.

No more damning a faint praise can be imagined than to describe someone simply as “head and shoulders above republicunts today”.
Even George W Bush qualifies for that lofty distinction.

I could have gotten along with him, he reminds me of my mother. Well intended, "You can do it" but there is a blind spot with that mindset.
Nobody should fault someone for trying or succeeding. I remember one video where McCain was in a mansion and said something like "I want everyone" meaning to live like that. And all I could do was scream at my TV! Ok, if everyone is rich, and everyone lives in a mansion all at the same time, who does the work?
I don't doubt there are good people in both parties that have the mindset of "do it and go for it", but even with liberals I see that utopia bent, and for most of society we are lucky if we can end up in the middle class and pay our bills.
The world has enough famous rich millionaires and billionaires. Nobody should fault or blame anyone for moving up. It is only when that mentality starts looking down on those that helped them move up, that is when I start having a problem.
My mom and I always loved each other even if we never always understood each other. It is unfortunate that old age and facing one's mortality seems to be the biggest driver to finally face what is important. Life is important, friendship is important, love is important. I never doubted her love for me, but late in her life I saw that change in her, that reality that "you cant take it with you". As politically different as we were, ultimately we loved each other. And as much as we yelled at each other, we were there for each other.
I could see myself debating McCain on the existence of God, just like I debated the same with my mother. If there was anyone I could trust to be my doctor, it would be McCain. Not because we agree, not because we yell, but because there is a decency in him and braveness in him, that transcends.
I could not do what he did, say accept what he did about himself, in that he admitted he had flawes, and so do I.

Like I said, I had issues with McCain. Never voted for him or any other republicunt fuck after moving to AZ. The only time I did vote for him was in the NY Primary in 2000 when he was running against that shitstain Bush. And even he is head and shoulders above todays republicunt.

Minn, I love your doggedness in fighting the right wing. Just keep in mind my mom more often than not voted for that party. I cant for the life of me understand it. But trust me, McCain like my mother when push came to shove, would not pull a Trump.
Ron Jr loved his dad, and he is a die hard democrat.
I give religion a very hard time as everyone knows. But not in the context that all 7 billion majority are bad. Logic is one thing, but humanity is still all we have.
If humanity wishes to extend or finite ride, the fight should not be about differences, but problem solving. Not rich vs poor, or race or religion, but survival. It is unfortunate that greed has a tendency to use tribalism to keep power. The greedy do not understand that the home they live on is as finite as those they vilify.

Any man that does not give up his mother/ brothers when electrodes are applied to his testicles is a hero to me. I hated the Viet Nam War but blame the polticians, not tne soldiers.

BINGO and that point is demonstrated by the decades later aftermath of McCain visiting Nam and getting a warm welcome from his former enemies.

Then we need more like the two of them.
Sadly, I see the opposite happening.

I'd love a discussion on when they think America was so great. The good old days always seem better in retrospect.

holy shit that's disgusting! Who would go after someone grieving their father? Basket of deplorables indeed.
I remember being so very anti-McCain during the 2004 elections. And I know he supported and voted for things that I was against, but I firmly believe he was a decent human being doing what he thought best for others.
Seeing him respond to people deriding Obama during his campaign really reinforced my respect for him. He did not give into to hate and stupid conspiracy theories, even thought it might have gained him votes. He had too much integrity for that, and he seems to really have respected Obama.
A true Republican is gone, one of the last. I feel history will surely look at it this way as well.
