Proof that I'm immortal
September 2, 2018 at 2:55 am
The first law of thermodynamics states that energy can neither be created or destroyed.
Since my body is a collection of atoms, and atoms are energy, then the energy that comprises me has always existed and always will.
I realize that the same argument could be made for a rock, but since I'm thinking about it and the rock isn't it seems significant.
What do you think?

Sure, energy appears to be immortal. "You" are series of configurations of some of that energy, but you won't be forever.

So you're saying that we are all immortal.
Remind again in a thousand years and I'll think about it.

Energy is a sea of ever changing configurations no? the configurations are not immortal, but the energy is, and the energy is what I've always been. And, based on the 2nd law of thermodynamics, when my configuration changes so will the configuration of the omniverse, that too seems significant in that I can fathom it.

Yes, I'm saying we're all immortal...although I cannot say as much for our individual consciousness.

If you're equating "you" with the timeline of all the energy that is part of you throughout your life, then sure. You're immortal. But usually "you" is rather more specific than that.

It appears it can't be destroyed.

More specific because of our ego? or do you mean something else.
"It appears it can't be destroyed."
You mean "appears," as in scientists present it as so, but maybe it can be destroyed and we just haven't figured it out yet?

But 'i' am my individual conscience. If my body were to live forever, somehow, but it'd be braindead; i wouldn't consider myself immortal. Nor if The energy of my consience being were transported upon my bodily death, into a new vessle if it didn't maintain my memories.
In fact, i would therefor argue that it'd probably closer to accurate to say i never existed in The first place, than it is to say that i am immortal.
Of course, we are opening a Huge vat of semantics here.

What you are is a persistent pattern of energy and matter.
Energy flows through your physical structure. But your atoms themselves are replaced on a regular basis and your pattern changes gradually over time.
When the pattern is destroyed, so are you.

If our thoughts are a series of electrical/chemical reactions, then they too are energy, always and forever existing, in both potential and physical change. I'm not arguing that we'll be individually conscious of any of this after death, that's way too convenient. Yet somehow the energy that comprises them still exists; I don't know what "vessel" will comprise that energy or what will become of the energy that comprised a memory.
For me, the significance of all this is ethereal.

For me the significance is non-existent
