The Conservative Voice
In my local newspaper (I am from a small town and the county only has one paper Big Grin ) my district's state senator has a weekly column called "The Conservative Voice." He was just recently elected and this was the first one that I have read.

He was discussing how he is drafting a bill on including intelligent design into the curriculum. He spent the entire column attempting to bash evolution by natural selection.

It was quite pathetic. He completely misunderstands Darwinism. He used the arguments of improbability and irreducible complexity.

It's quite scary that someone running my state's government (let alone the knuckleheads in Washington) believe in intelligent design.

"God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8).

"Always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you" (1 Peter 3:15).

My bet's on Texas or Kansas. One of the red states, no doubt.

Honestly though, the same people wonder why the education system in this country is the sad shape that it is and then they go and make an entire political platform out against science and math.
I'm looking at you, the Religious Right ™ of this country.
If today you can take a thing like evolution and make it a crime to teach in the public schools, tomorrow you can make it a crime to teach it in the private schools and next year you can make it a crime to teach it to the hustings or in the church. At the next session you may ban books and the newspapers...
Ignorance and fanaticism are ever busy and need feeding. Always feeding and gloating for more. Today it is the public school teachers; tomorrow the private. The next day the preachers and the lecturers, the magazines, the books, the newspapers. After a while, Your Honor, it is the setting of man against man and creed against creed until with flying banners and beating drums we are marching backward to the glorious ages of the sixteenth centry when bigots lighted fagots to burn the men who dared to bring any intelligence and enlightenment and culture to the human mind. ~Clarence Darrow, at the Scopes Monkey Trial, 1925

Politics is supposed to be the second-oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first. ~Ronald Reagan

It's hilarious how you said Texas or Kansas. I'm right in the middle - Oklahoma. Tongue

Well, it's good then that I didn't bet money on it.
I don't really hear much about Oklahoma but what little I heard about this topic is that they have similar issues as Texas as far as church/state seporation. I'm guessing they're not as crazy with public shinnanigans. Usually though, when I hear things about history books not being conservative enough or science books not teaching 'both sides of the debate' between Intelligent Design and Evolution, it's usually from Texas and Kansas' Board of Education is infamous for that whole debate.

I'm from northern Indiana.
I think the state in general is center-right to the effect that it's often a red state in election but not afraid to go blue every now and again. I usually see a healthy mix of democrat and republican officials elected locally and otherwise.
I'm not sure though where Indiana squares as far as graduation rates and test scores compared with the rest of the country. I know we're not doing poorly though and I don't believe there has been any major moves by the state education to push religious philosophies in school cirriculum.

Given all that, I really enjoy living here.

I have heard of how crazy the Texas Board of Education can get. I didn't know that Kansas' was as well. Very interesting.

It's not frightening to me. I've all ready seen members of this forum - people who I would have thought above it - display vicious conservative, anarchistic, and libertarian sentiments and political views.

What do you not like about "libertarian sentiments and political views?" Do you not like liberty or something? Do you not believe people have a right to live their life the way they want without interference from the government as long as they are not hurting fellow citizens?

Unlike you, who instead of actually attacking our positions on an intellectual level, try to insult and belittle us for not being a socialist like yourself. Your wording in this post shows that; claiming that our positions are somehow "below" yours even though you fail to give an argument as to why.

Maybe you should actually attempt to understand people's positions, rather than just hate us for having them. You're a socialist; it doesn't bother me in the slightest, even though I find the position completely untenable. Attack our arguments using logic, and stop resorting to fallacious reasoning.

No, he thinks the government should take all our money and live our lives for us.
