What's your biggest beef with religion?

RE: What's your biggest beef with religion?
It's insistence that magic or the supernatural are a explanation for real phenomenon . Then attempting to rewrite epistemology to give  special exemptions to their beliefs.

Mine: It's anti-intellectual. -- It discourages and disparages intellectual curiosity.

In my experience, I’ve never found that to be the case. I’ve heard of some who behave that way, but many do not as well.

Don't you have any gripes about religion, RR? It's okay if you do. Even Jesus turned over a table or two every once in a while. Wink

Religion in general... not particularly. With Christianity.... sure there are some gripes, sometimes we create are own problems. But nothing in particular sticking out at the moment.

Anti intellectual and Hell-bent on bringing the rest of us down to their level. Technically, that’s two gripes, but they are so interconnected.

My beef with religion.

I hate being lied to.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

These 2 are related. You can't have indoctrination without also suppressing skepticism and critical thinking skills, so I'll go with that as my biggest beef with religion.

Yeah, I picked it because it's the root cause of almost all other problems with religion. It is the religion in a sense, because without it, the religion would die out almost immediately. Something that was true, moral and worthwhile would not be so fragile.
