In the late 19th century, astronomers viewed the entire Universe as being around 6,000 parsecs (around 19K light years) across.
Another scale of the universe thing:
The exoplanet beta pictoris B was imaged directly by Gemini planet imager at the Gemini south telescope in chili.
The technical challenge of imagining that planet in the glare of the star beta pictoris, which is twice the mass of the sun and ten times brighter, is nearly the same as trying to use a telescope in in New York City to image a firefly 23 feet from a bank of floodlights over AT&T park in San Francisco that is on and pointed directly at the telescope.
