I'm sorry.

Jesus gave up his long weekend for your sins.
Dying to live, living to die.

In secular terms, let's say Joe murders his wife, but all Jim does is cheat on his taxes.  If both die unshriven, Joe goes straight to hell and is pretty well fucked.  Jim, on the other hand, might just have to spend 10 000 years being lashed with chains dipped in acid for knowingly failing to disclose the NZ$50 his neighbour paid him for mending the shed.

See?  Catholicism makes sense!!

I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. Presumably even during that weekend omnipotence would not be too inconvenienced by mere suffering.

Not every time.

Jesus and I have an understanding: I carry on, and he minds his own fucking business.

At the end of a waterslide is a split into 2 pools. One is cool clean water, one is lava and once you're in you can't get out. It's like the langoliers where everything you've already done gets eaten away and only the 2 pools are left. Your argument is that the guy at the top of the slide, that is telling you to go right and not left to the lava, is not trying hard enough to stop you from making a stupid choice?
"There ought to be a term that would designate those who actually follow the teachings of Jesus, since the word 'Christian' has been largely divorced from those teachings, and so polluted by fundamentalists that it has come to connote their polar opposite: intolerance, vindictive hatred, and bigotry." -- Philip Stater, Huffington Post

That's EXACTLY the argument, and it's a damned good one (no pun intended).
