You can give mechanistic answers to teleological questions. You can answer a 'why' question like a how question.
Question:"Why did he do it?" Teleological answer: Because, at the time he thought it was the right thing to do. That was his intention. Mechanistic answer: Because his desires motivated him to do it and motives are, as Arthur Schopenhauer put it "[...]Causes experienced from within". That was his cause (or apparent cause). |
