If they ask if god had any influence in getting ill they'll answer that there was no underlying reason for sickness to happen, if you ask why you we're sick without giving hints of god in the question they probably answer the scientific reason.

You can give mechanistic answers to teleological questions. You can answer a 'why' question like a how question.

Question:"Why did he do it?"

Teleological answer: Because, at the time he thought it was the right thing to do. That was his intention.

Mechanistic answer: Because his desires motivated him to do it and motives are, as Arthur Schopenhauer put it "[...]Causes experienced from within". That was his cause (or apparent cause).
