The communist state of Kerela, India

The communist state of Kerela, India
Quote:Communist-led government under E. M. S. Namboodiripad resulted from the first elections for the new Kerala Legislative Assembly in 1957.[104] It was one of the earliest elected Communist governments, after Communist success in the 1945 elections in the Republic of San Marino.[105][106][107]

Kerala hosts two major political alliances: the
United Democratic Front (UDF), led by the Indian National Congress; and the Left Democratic Front (LDF), led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)). As of 2016, the LDF is the ruling coalition; Pinarayi Vijayan of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) is the Chief Minister, while Ramesh Chennithala of the UDF is the Leader of Opposition. Strikes, protests and marches are ubiquitous in Kerala because of the comparatively strong presence of labour unions.[163][164] According to the Constitution of India, Kerala has a parliamentary system of representative democracyuniversal suffrage is granted to residents.[165] The government is organised into the three branches:

Kerala has the lowest positive population growth rate in India, 3.44%; the highest  (HDI), 0.712 in 2015; the highest literacy rate, 93.91% in the 2011 census; the highest life expectancy, 77 years

I only found out this place existed at the weekend, it is far from common knowledge I feel, and paints a pretty rosy picture of hard socialism.

Indian states do not have nearly as much autonomy as the ones in the US, and communism is not something we commonly associate with Kerala here in India. Development, yes. Beaches, maybe. Weird accents. Literacy. Muslims, even. But communism? Not so much.

You should have also pasted the first paragraph of the Economy section. The original Democratic socialist welfare economy was liberalized in the 90s lifting onerous restrictions against capitalism and FRI that resulted in economic growth and increased employment. I suppose the lesson here is that communism can only be successful if the word is included in the name of one party of a two party democratic republic operating a market economy. Hard socialism indeed.
