Plenty of normal citizens stop those robberies too. Plenty of normal citizens also get themselves killed attempting to stop those robberies. Goes to show, veteran or not, bullets can kill you. A lot of guys think they know themselves and how they'd react until it actually happens. Would be interesting to see how you'd live with yourself if you got someone else killed trying to be the tough guy who "won't give in." It's not about giving in though. It's about the fact that my wallet with, maybe $60 in it, ain't worth the chance to die or get someone else killed because I think I have a point to prove. I used to think like you, trust me. But I've been through it enough times to know I was wrong. Hopefully you never have to learn that lesson.
No, sounds like you have been playing too much street fighter, and thought it was real. You're the one yappin about being in shootouts and such. You can always tell the men from the boys when the kiddies start talking about their street wars.
You're right, bullets can kill you. But they don't have to. I don't look for fights, but I don't run from them either because it's counter productive. If you let a bully, "bully you" then you might as well put a bullseye on your back because they or someone else will do it again.
One thing I learned way back in high school, you give it to the bully and he'll always be there as a bully. There was a little gang of kids that would pick fights. One day they actually called me and said they were coming over to fight me. I said "come over." Got ready to go, stood my ground, and no on ever had to throw a punch. After that, we were friends all through high school and even to this day. Why? Because I don't think like "prey." It doesn't mean I want to be a predator, but when I have to flip that switch I do. Like I said, I'm not the one they're looking for. Wow, more tough guy grandstanding from the military vet (separating the boys from the men... funny.) You've been in a war? Cool, you're tougher than me dude. Point taken.
Who is yapping about street wars? I said I've been in some situations where I've had to defend myself. They're situations I wish never happened because they've changed my life for the worse and I've seen enough that it's usually the guys who think they'd fight back that'd be the first to run. I've also dealt with those situations enough mentally that I'm comfortable talking about them, which I really haven't even done in detail. Who's yapping besides you, tough guy? If you've seen combat and prefer to refer to it as, "spending time overseas," that's your business. Maybe you just haven't learned how to deal with what you've been through. And if that's the case, I hope you get some help for it. You probably know better than I do that too many vets go without the help they need, sometimes because they tell themselves they don't need it, sometimes because they can't get it. The government can be shitty that way sometimes.
You equating a high school fight to an armed robbery situation shows how insanely disconnected you are. Thinking that some gang banger with a gun is equivalent to a schoolyard bully who just needs to be stood up to is INSANE. These kids out here, some of them anyway, will shoot you and your wife without thinking twice about and LAUGH AT YOU. They're not gonna learn any lesson because you "stood your ground." You're fuckin delusional dude. I truly hope you wise up one day or that you never find yourself in a situation like this. How absolutely insane. The fact that you take pride in thinking this way is even crazier.
Or maybe I'm crazy. Maybe you'd knock the gun out of his hand, take him down and hold him til the cops get there. Then he'd learn his lesson and tell all his gangbangin' homies not to fuck around. And you'd be the hero. Just maybe. But guess what man? Probably the fuck not. More than likely you just get yourself or someone else hurt and that masked punk goes on about their life not thinking twice about what they did to you.

Gonna go polish my dogs tags and start wearing them again. Apparently what they stand for makes one invincible. 'Course I should probably leave out the red penicillin allergy one...I'd hate to be attacked by an antibiotic wielding bad guy...never show your weakness.
Hmmm....should I carry my DD214 to prove my super powers?

It isn't about being tough. I don't walk around picking fights with people and I don't look for trouble. I typically practice MYOB, and I don't have issues with people bothering me. If you do, and have been in shootouts, then great. Like I said, I'm not the one they're looking for.
As soon as I got out of the Army and finished college, my first job was working with the severely mentally ill out in the community. It was to help them live stable lives despite their conditions. I went into the worst places, because that's where people making less than $700/mo had to live, and as such you seen some of the worst possible conditions. Did it for years. Nobody ever bothered me. Why? It's simple. I don't make myself a target. No reason to.
As I said, it's not about being tough. I would rather "not be tough" most of the time because it doesn't serve a purpose in a normal day. If someone shows up and tries to mug me, I'll flip the switch. If not, just more MYOB for me.
I guess you've never seen the current generation of high school kids. Many of them are the gangbangers, but not all. When I was in school, the bad kids were known as "hoods." They were your high school gang. Those were the kids I was referring to. They would pick fights with people, and the ones who made themselves a daily target became exactly that. The ones who had the sense to let them know that they could do it, but they would have to work for it, they generally left them alone.
Where do you come up with these scenarios? Television? The boogeyman isn't out there trying to get you. People aren't waiting around every corner wanting to beat you up. They look for the ones who makes themselves targets. You walk into a dark alley with a wallet bulging out of your back pocket and a shiny gold watch on your wrist, then you're probably making yourself a target. If you MYOB and don't wander into strange dark places or run your mouth at people you don't know, more times than not you'll be fine.

No, don't wear your dogtags. That's like putting a target on your back. THAT'S how they get you. Everyone knows that nobody who minds their own business ever gets hurt.

Talking about separating the boys from men... telling me I'm crying... Talking about how you stand up to bullies and don't give in to criminals. Jeez dude. The napoleon complex is strong with this one.
Clearly you got it all figured out buddy. Sorry I wasted my breath.

Not it at all. You constantly act like a victim. From the beginning I said I understood your position, yet you kept insisting I should deviate from who I am and conclude I should do things your way. If I was able to respect your original statement and your reasoning for it, then what more do you want? I'm not going to lie and say I would do the same. Even though I see the merit in your idea, I couldn't even do it if I wanted to. I can guarantee you that switch would flip. Not because I necessarily want it to, but sometimes we just are who we are.
Oh, believe me. I don't have it "all figured out", which is why I practice MYOB. I can't control what everybody else is doing, so I do my best and don't worry about everybody else.

But it's funny watching you play the tough guy angle, then proceed to try and convince everyone you're not playing the tough guy angle. And then the napoleon complex stuff is even funnier. Guess you're just that guy huh? You got it Frank Castle. Stay safe out there.

Not playing any "tough guy angle." I'm just not afraid that the mean ol' boogeyman is going to get me. That's your delusion, not mine.
