Most Star Wars bad guys are just too over the top for my liking.

Best villain IMO is Thrawn. Calculating, intelligent, and has actual reasons behind his actions.

Like many I’m not a huge fan of the new trilogy—visually they’re fun, but, I feel like Disney could’ve done much better with the story. Not to mention The Last Jedi kinda ruined the physics of the Star War universe (I know, it’s all sci-fi fantasy so it doesn’t make sense anyway, but why in the heck aren’t lightspeed missiles used more often if they’re so devastating?)

I LOVED Rogue One, however. Solo, haven’t seen, it wasn’t a necessary movie.

As much as I feel Disney has dropped the ball with Star Wars, I AM excited to see what they will do with the new Star Wars Land in their parks.

I've never had even the slightest interest in the Star Wars series. Plenty of people I know don't seem to be hopeful for the future of the series, though. I think it has pretty much run its course at this point; how many more outer space shoot 'em up movies can you make?

You can keep making space opera until people stop paying to see it.  So...for a long time yet.

Not bagging on SW specifically - I've got a whole range of issues with Star Trek as well.

Well, if we're going to be technical, you can continue to make space opera until long after people stop paying to see it. Maybe space opera is the first thing that was, and the last thing that will be.

I've tried to watch "Solo" three times. Always give up at the poker game.

The first two movies of the last trilogy have been a serious let down.  And it seems with Abrams helming the last movie, we're likely to get more of the same.

Rogue One, on the other hand, was in my personal opinion, the best SW movie since Empire.

Then we have Solo.  While kinda fun it wasn't a great movie.

On the TV front, the animated shows have, for the most part, been great.  They have filled out the gaps between movies very well.  I'm not loving what little I've seen of the new animated shw, "Resistance", but I'll judge it on its own merits.

And the new live action show, "The Mandalorian" shows promise but we'll see about that, too.

So, should we be optimistic or pessimistic about the future?

I lost interest after the first original 3. I did try to give the new series a chance, but to me it fell flat.

But only to me. James Bond films have the same arguments between fans. I can't stand the new guy, but I also didn't like Sean Connery, the original. My favorite Bond was Roger Moore.

I think the same can be said for Star Trek. I was never really  fond of the original TV series, nor the Movies with the TV series cast. But I did like some episodes of Next Generation and Voyager.

It can really only be chalked up to a generational/taste issue.

Did you catch the bit where Kit Kinnison had four, and only four, choices for his future mate(s)?

I read all of the available James Bond books when I was 18. Fleming was such a wanker, and an old fashioned sexist. . At the time I lacked the sophistication to tell. EG that crap about 'shaken not stirred'.  That will chip the ice and produce a watery drink.

Have only ever liked 2 of the  film Bonds: Sean Connery and Daniel Craig;-Roger Moore was at least ten years too old and Pierce Brosnan was too wet.--loved Judy Dench as M

I worked out James Bond's age. I reckon James is 39. Almost the perfect age for a man, which I think is 35. (30 for a woman)
---of course these are only my opinions. Won't get into discussion about it. They're only movies, and tend to be a smidge sado-masochistic..  (the books are more so)

RE: Star Wars - does it have a future?
Yeah I guess Star Wars is a perfect example that story can't stop on its own but it's constantly perpetuated because people want more and that's why we have official versions, half official versions, wannabe official versions, fan fictions.

Basically it's the same as with religions and their myths. For instance in Christianity there is a Bible (which itself was developed trough long time and has many versions and many hundreds of books that didn't get in) and there is also additional stuff that people believe and create every day that is on the side.

But when it comes to SW movies themselves, do people still care what will happen to the characters? What can happen to the characters anymore? Will Ray become Jedi? - is this even something that people expect? Will Kylo die? Even in the last movie Kylo was just *meh* *whatever*, so will the movie be again filled with long almost pointless adventures by characters that people don't care much? Is there any character in SW that people care anyway?

Maybe Ray becomes a Sith and Kylo goes good - will anyone care? Will that be unexpected?
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"
