Should Flat-Earthers be debated or ignored?
RE: Should Flat-Earthers be debated or ignored?
You don't have to engage them to refute them. Ignoring them as a person is a part of the process. I sometimes use "upstream", as in "Upstream the proposal has been made that the GPS system can't possibly work."

His goal wasn't to learn anything, but to insult all the participants with his cultivated ignorance and to lodge complaints against anyone who pointed out the fact that he was nothing more than an intellectual illiterate with a closed mind.  Dodgy

The same happens here everyday, but with the religious (save some few exceptions).

Lots of people dive right in when a religious pops up. I don't see how it's any different for flatters.

Sounds a lot like saying ignore them lol

No worries I'm just trying to understand what you're saying

Two speakers. One says the other is an asshole for not realizing the Earth is flat.

The other speaks on all the reasons why the Earth is round.

Ignore the speaker, address the issues.

Clear now?

Not really. Earlier in the thread you said to ignore flat earthers. Now you're saying to talk about the issues... but to who? To other people who already agree with you? Also, you said ignoring something isn't a virtue or whatever and yet you said to ignore flat-earthers. So no, it's not clear tbh
If you're frightened of dying, and you're holding on, you'll see devils tearing your life away. But if you've made your peace, then the devils are really angels, freeing you from the Earth.

The way to speak with flat earthers is not to debate them but to tell them off.

Like "What NASA and scientists are lying and creating round Earth photos? That's not an argument but paranoia."
"What? Gravity doesn't exist but things just fall down because there are giant magnets underneath Earth? There's no evidence for that."
"What? You say airplanes disappear when they arrive at Earth's edge and reappear at the opposite side? That is a nonsense."
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

To the fence sitters. I made that point "earlier in the thread". It's not virtue to ignore a problem, and flatters are a problem. No need to get in a debate with them, just show where they're wrong. If they give you any shit about it pull their stomach out through their mouth. It shuts them up PDQ.

Ah okay I get what you're saying. Thanks.

Believe it or not, I have a friend who recently rescinded on his FE views. He admits now that he was being insane and wasn't really considering all of the evidence. He also openly admitted that he very much wanted it to be true (that the Earth is flat). It was definitely interesting having that conversation with him.

Good for him. He understands the flatters better than I do. Same with religious people, I can't understand them at all. Never religious, even when I was ordered to go services in boot camp.

He said he gradually started to notice how undeniable evidence that proved the Earth is round was always called a hoax by fellow Flatters, and said he slowly but surely began to grow weary of their claims that every organization or group, that had some authority in any subject to do with the Earth or space or whatever else, was "in on" the conspiracy. At some point, he started to ask questions like, "How many people can really keep a secret like that?"

While I'm disappointed that it took him this long to get there, I'm glad he's arrived.

Now, imagine ALL the flatters doing all that work. Ain't gonna. That's why I don't debate them.
