Anyone into combat sports?

Anyone into combat sports?
I stated in another thread I started that I feel exercise is important and something everyone should partake in, so long as they're physically capable. I think exercise, for me, elevates my mood, makes me feel better about myself and gives me energy for the day. Sometimes it's a chore, but I try to force myself to get a work out in daily, even if it's a quick half-hour of cardio or something.

That being said, I used to HATE exercising when I was younger and getting into martial arts/combat sports is what sparked my interest in exercise.

I started off taking Kenpo and Jujutsu, which are both Japanese martial arts. Jujutsu is often pronounced Jujitsu and it what modern Brazilian jiu-jitsu is derived from. When I got a little older I started taking Judo, which is also derived from Jujutsu, and then finally BJJ. I know train in BJJ and kickboxing.

I really want to get into Muay Thai at some point for the kicks and clinch positions they teach; it's super interesting stuff.

I've never fought competitively as I really have no interest in that, but I have friends that do and they seem to love it. I'm not sure what kind of money is in it at the amateur level, though.

Anyone else here into boxing, kickboxing or maybe some kind of martial arts?

I really love combat sports because they changed my life for the better. Not only do I feel confident in defending myself physically from an attacker but I also feel I can protect people around me that I care about and, to be honest, I wouldn't be in the shape I am in today without combat sports. They honestly changed my life, Brazilian jiu-jitsu being the main one that really caught my interest.

I used to do a fair bit of LARP when I was a younger man, as well as épée at university.

I remember it being pretty intensive from a work out standpoint.  Running about with 20-30lbs of armour and a 10lb shield, trying to thump some other bloke into submission while he tries to do the same to you.

I'm not much of a roleplayer type of person, but hey, sounds fun.

Any reason you stopped?

Just sort of lost interest.

I am a bit of a hypocrite myself. American football is dangerous especially concussions. But I have never liked boxing or cage fighting because of the long term damage it can do to the brain.

But as far as martial arts as a display, or in a action movie where there is no real contact, i can appreciate the art form.

Even soccer has a risk of concussions. Contact sports in general are still a risk. Head injuries especially can cause long term injury to the brain, and even aggression out of the sport of play.

But considering I smoke like a chimney and drink like a fish, I am one to talk.

We actually see more CTE in sports like Football than we do in MMA. Boxing is a different story though, for a couple of reasons.

That being said, taking classes/training is much different than competitive fighting. Even if you train regularly in a sport like boxing, you're not necessarily going to be getting into the ring with people to spar all of the time. It's actually pretty rare to have a full on sparring session with someone unless you're legitimately training for a fight.

The shooting range? No.
