Huh...?
If you're frightened of dying, and you're holding on, you'll see devils tearing your life away. But if you've made your peace, then the devils are really angels, freeing you from the Earth.

5.  I could have got as much as 20 years hard.  What I did get was a bill for room and board while I was in prison.

Was you accused to be associated with members of a Republican , loyalist group or you don't know ?

I precise for those who don't know than "Republican" means Irish nationalists who want unification of Ireland.
Loyalists also known under the name of Unionists are those who want Northern Ireland remain a territory under UK administration.

Irish Republicanism on Wikipedia : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_republicanism
Irish Nationalism on Wikipedia : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_nationalism
Ulster Loyalism on Wikipedia : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ulster_loyalism
Unionism in Ireland on Wikipedia (Contain a list of Loyalist paramilitary groups): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unionism_in_Ireland
Ulster nationalism (Those who want to create a state in Northern Ireland independent from UK and not join the Republic of Ireland) on Wikipedia : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ulster_nationalism

As I think many members of this forum did never heard anything about the conflict in detail.
I will tell you this conflict with the help of Wikipedia.

In 1922 the Irish Free state (Irish : Saorstát Éireann) was founded consequently to Anglo-Irish War (Jan/21/1919 - July/11/1921 or a duration of 2 years, 5 months, 2 weeks and 6 days. There were some violences until June 1922).
The Irish Free State (1922-1937 , the south) was the part of Ireland that became independent (When it was recognised by British side) from United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland (1801-1922. United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland exist de facto since 1922 but it did not adopted this name until 1927).
The north of the Island know as Northern Ireland remain in the UK until today.
But some people didn't agree with the fact than North of the Isle remain under British rule.
Therefore they continued to use political violence and they are still groups active today (Groups existing in 20's are now extinct but there were others to replace these).

There was already an Irish state before Irish Free State between 1919-1922 named Irish Republic (Irish : Poblacht na hÉireann).
It wasn't recognised by British crown but it was de facto a state.

There were armed fights before Anglo-Irish War : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_revo...ary_period
The troubles (Late 1960s-1998) are finish but there are still a warfare campaign ongoing since 1998.
For those who don't know what's the troubles : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Troubles
For those who want to know what is dissident Irish Republican campaign ongoing since 1998 : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dissident_...n_campaign

This entity who continued to fight is Irish Republican Army (1922-1969) born from a split in Irish Republican Army (Irish : Óglaigh na hÉireann) an organisation existing between 1919-1922.
The other side born from the split is National Army (Irish : An tArm Náisiúnta) founded in 1922 (Dissolved in 1924) who didn't continued to fight as it was the army of Irish Free State.
IRA existing between 1919-1922 is the historical IRA.
IRA existing between 1922-1969 is the second IRA.
Defence force (Irish : Fórsaí Cosanta) succeeded to National Army in 1924 and this is still existing.

The second IRA split in two groups in 1969.
The first is Provisional IRA (Irish : IRA Sealadach) deactivated in 1998 and dissolved in 2005 and the second is Official Irish Republican Army or OIRA (Irish : Óglaigh na hÉireann Oifigiúil) inactive nowadays but I don't know if this group still exist.
There was a split in OIRA in 1974 with Irish National Liberation Army or INLA (Irish : Arm Saoirse Náisiúnta na hÉireann) that stopped attacks in 1998 and formally renounced to armed actions in 2009.
I don't know if INLA still exist and there were maybe others splits in OIRA than INLA.
There was a split in INLA withe the foundation of Irish People's Liberation Organisation in 1986 dissolved in 1992.

There was a split in 1986 from Provisional IRA with a group named Continuity IRA or CIRA (Irish : IRA Leanúnach) active in 2019. CIRA does have many splits but I won't say anything about these as I didn't understood the full extent of these because of a lack of information.
There was another split in Provisional IRA in 1997 with a group still active today named Real IRA (RIRA) nicknamed New IRA (NIRA) since 2012.
There was a split inside RIRA in 2009 : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%93glai...ter_group)
There were maybe others splits inside Real IRA but I haven't informations about others splits.

An entry of Wikipedia with a detailed explanation about splits : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_Republican_Army
Violent Irish nationalists fought between themselves when they were not attacking British forces and loyalists paramilitaries.
It does seem this is still the case now.

Could have been worse. I was resisting arrest and tried to fight the cop. He beat the shit out of me in under 10 seconds.

In the jurisdiction in which action took place. Expunged means wiped out or authorities can still access to it ?

@viogit

Excellent post thanks.

Of Irish Catlic ethnicity, my knowledge of modern Irish history could be best described as 'patchy'.

However, I have always been in sympathy with Ireland, with no sympathy at all for England., going back to Cromwell. Perhaps a tad irrational, which I think is often the case with people of ethnicities who have never actually lived in the mother country. I think there is a tendency to form rather simplistic and romantic ideas.

Yeah, I've been over a couple of times. Last time was in 2000, when I spent a few weeks back packing in the South. Loved it.

I can't be certain, but the other person involved was more likely a Republican than not.  His 'Bugger The Queen Mum' t-shirt was kind of a giveaway.
