I plead the 5th.

Their 'logic' was that if you're guilty, then you're supposed to be in prison, so the State should feed and house you.  If it turns out that you were innocent (or charges not proved), then you should have, by rights, been on the outside earning money and supporting yourself.  The terrific idiocy of this position eventually led to the policy being scrapped.

On the plus side, it wasn't a law, just an administrative policy, so they had no way to enforce collection.  I recall reading about one bloke who was remanded for a few weeks.  When he got out, he wrote a letter to the Belly Telly saying he wasn't paying, so they could feel free to repossess his time in jail.

1. Armed robbery, kidnapping, disruption of public service (like preventing people from calling police, they claimed I disabled the phone lines), assault, etc.

2. I'd rather not say what state the charges were in.

3. Charges were dismissed after being out on bond with a GPS tracker for over a year. Without the cooperation of the main complainants the State had no case and dismissed everything; prosecutor filed a nolle prosequi which means cannot pursue or something in Latin.

4. I was never indicted. I was out on bond for over a year and the charges got dismissed.

5. Technically I was facing upwards of 20 years. Realistically I was probably looking at doing around 5 years in a level 3 prison. Level 3 is pretty rough stuff so I'm very glad I avoided this.

I actually just got news of the dismissal the other day. I can't relay to you how elated I feel. Like a million pounds off my shoulders. Crazy.

Innocent until proven guilty...

Basically, there was a situation between myself and some people who stole from me, which was little more than a quick scuffle, so I would say the charges were blown insanely out of proportion; hence why the State has no case without the cooperation of the witnesses.

That's the name of the game in the legal system; overcharge the hell out of someone so they have to plead down to SOMETHING, meaning the DA gets their high conviction rate. It's all politics. Most people would be so frightened by the thought of going to trial for Armed Robbery (legal term is aggravated robbery in many places), which is an F1 (first degree felony), and will happily plead down to an F3, do a year or two and some probation. That's how it works here in the States. It's shitty as fuck and plenty of people get screwed hard by the justice system here.

It could be worse, I guess.

In this case, the right thing happened and they decided to drop everything. They didn't have a damn thing on me anyway, realistically. The witnesses involved in the case don't want to pursue the charges so it's done.
