Belief in God is a clinic

I do in fact respect most of the atheist members here, albeit , some more than others.. With one or two exceptions, I have not been able to respect the believers who have found their way to this atheist forum. As a group, you have shown yourselves to be either incapable of or impervious to reasoned argument and facts. You are clearly anti science and anti intellectual. I do not disrespect you because you are stupid; I do not believe that to be true. I disrespect you because you are wilfully ignorant. That is an egregious offence to me because it can be fixed by the application of learning. Absent is any real desire to actually learn about topics you try to argue.,such as evolution and DNA--this is doubly galling when one realises that atheists here often have a greater knowledge of scripture than many of the dogmatic believers. Respect will be forthcoming when you have earned it. (March 26, 2019 at 7:56 pm)fredd bear Wrote:(March 21, 2019 at 7:06 pm)Catharsis Wrote: Some call that mocking. If you're asking if believing in God is a clinically diagnosable delusion, then no, typical religious beliefs do not meet the clinical threshold for diagnosis. Diagnosing a mental disorder revolves around the effect it has on one's ability to live their day-to-day life, and most theists are quite functional in that regard.
I'm not anti-Christian. I'm anti-stupid.
Only because the delusion is shared, expected. If your community believed that eating the flesh of human beings granted you power, it wouldn't be disordered to think so.
Conveniently enough........
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!
To be fair it's probably down to what degree of belief they hold. If throwing stones at peoples heads on Gods say so seems acceptable to them, then I would question their sanity.
The common garden variety of believer (I can't think of why food is here, so God) are harmless enough and will go through life happy in their bubble, but of course with similar usage of mental health services as non believers. RE: Belief in God is a clinic

It isn't, at least not with respect to diagnosis as a disorder. Being super religious in a religious community won't qualify someone. As MA pointed out, typical beliefs...whatever those beliefs happen to be, evade the categorization. It takes atypical beliefs to get a person into the running. Doesn't matter much if the typical and atypical beliefs are equally loony or if they produce nearly identical consequences.
The atypicality of the one set is what causes difficulty in their lives, particularly with respect to interaction and relationships with the typical set. That a person isn't disordered doesn't mean that they aren't balls to the wall crazy, it just means that they're balls to the wall crazy in the usual way, lol. In an important sense, being disordered can be contextualized as the effect of external societal pressure and expectation.

What is disordered anyway? Who is that 100% ordered person we should all be living up to?

Any significant pattern of behavior or thought that persistently impacts your life in a negative way, for whatever reason.
Paraphrasing, but not by much. We all express the characteristic traits of disorders to one degree or another, it's not necessarily their presence but how they effect our lives. There's no calculation of ordered or percentages of order.
