I'm not sure what you mean when you say that all sides thinking this is a problem, but..perhaps all sides think this because it's true and it's exactly the sort of thing no side can afford to get unilaterally wrong? Any group facing some other that recognizes this while, themselves, categorically rejecting the notion and rejecting war faces subjugation and/or eradication.

Seems like a softball after looking at how wars of aggression can be justified. I'd say so, yeah.

The kicker there was "always". Germany was fighting a defensive war in 1945, so was Japan.

Then the question was, more properly, "are all claimed defensive wars actually defensive". The answer to that is no even if the answer to the question "are defensive wars always justifiable" is yes.
Regardless of whether or not germany and japan began with pretense and pretext that I may disagree with as justifiable, by the time they were trying to beat back the red, and red white and blue tides...I can't really see how a person could fault them for or claim that their defense of country was unjustifiable.
Defense is probably the singlemost unassailable justification for war that can be imagined. That's what makes it such a great pretense or pretext in the first place.
