Nice work by everone involved    Great

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-47873592

To the BBC science writer:

That is not the image of the black hole.  It is the image of the accretion disk around the black hole.  Black hole by definition can’t be imaged.   It would have the same effect on any imaging sensor as if it was not there.   Saying the image of the accretion disk is the image of the black hole is like saying an image of Pluto is an image of the sun.

It is being taken as proof that black holes exist (along with SgrA* images), and that's good for the boffins. I don't think any knowledgeable person expected to actually see an object that can't be seen.

My gawd, that thing is mind-blowingly massive.
(Talking about M87, fellas)

IDK, but it seems that it could take many years in proper time (as experienced by a person or planet within it) to reach the singularity.
Billions, maybe.

OMG...Could our universe exist inside a black hole lying within another universe? Panic

I like to think that each SMBH is the "origin" of a Big Bang in the universe created by that monster. Time rate relative to that universe, of course. If true then each SMBH creates a new universe where SMBHs repeat the process. ENDLESS universes each cut off from all others.

Proofs of black hole as conclusive as current state of physics allows have existed for decades.   This photo adds literally nothing to it.

The best that current state of physics allows still permit what we believe to be black holes to actually be some other types of theoretically plausible exotic objects.  This photo also does not exclude these lingering doubts.

If that was all there was I might agree with you, somewhat.
