What I fnid interesting is that humans show far more compassion and care for animals than the usually do for themselves or other humans.

That could well be true Kit. I know my cat's make so few demands, and show love unconditionally, are sweet curious and defend me. Cat's are better than people. I think a lot of that lies with their motives being far simpler and manageable. I think it's amazing with human complexity, than anyone ever trusts anyone else's motivations ever. Seriously though, maybe this is the tack to use when wanting governmental change. Perhaps a better attainable and reachable goal as a society is to figure out how to best live in our environment responsibly with the baser things first (and relate them to animals for the emotive force to push it): pollution, resources, other animals and ourselves. Put a sad little animal face on all of them and you might see a change.
I mean I would never skip any medicine prescribed for my cat, but I can't be bothered to take one pill in the morning sometimes.
