As some of you may know, a sister forum, atheistdiscussion.org, has as its primary rule, "Don't be a dick." The inadequacy and subjectivity and potential abuse of such a criterion has been criticized by several on this forum as likely to result in unjust and unfair abuses by the staff of that forum. I do not see how such criticisms would not apply here. Tiberius has been good about doing what he can to eliminate subjectivity from interpretation and enforcement of the rules, instead of depending upon subjective interpretations of intent, or whatever. I don't know that Steelcurtain's summary of the criteria is accurate or not, but to my eye it incorporates a lot of the practice, if not any letter of the law. I would ask that Tiberius clarify if these are indeed the criteria being employed, and if so, why he considers such subjective criteria wise when applied to slack, but not when applied to the forum as a whole.
'Don't be a dick' was the number one rule on TTA as stated repeatedly by Stark Raving. Stark was a very early admin there, if not the first. He had more than one run at the admin spot often at Seth's urging. It worked there and other admins and staff attempted to hold to the concept. AD, being made up of many former TTA members, knew that the concept had worked at TTA and they adopted it as their own...perhaps because their base understands it.
Subjective, yes. Stark was first to declare that the forum wasn't a democracy and he (or other admins along the way) had final say.
As for the situation you find yourself in...it was made clear here on this forum that the word in question was not to be used. Tiberius was pretty clear. Since Slack is made up of members of this forum it follows that the same people who agree with the word not being used here would follow that lead to the Slack site.
It seems you thought it was funny and it fell flat, badly. The audience, at least those with authority at Slack, made a call.

I get that you were trying to be funny. I too say the wrong thing to the wrong audience sometimes. All I can say is that you offended someone whom we trust enough to have put in charge of these sorts of things. He thought you needed cooling off. I'm all white, so I can't determine whether it was offensive or not, because I'm not in a position to be offended. He'll unpause you, I'm sure, once the powers that be determine it's been enough time.
Quote:this is an example of reverse racism on his part
It's quite clearly not for the one and only fact that his reaction had nothing to do with your race.
Quote:the administration of slack already suffers from a lack of transparency
It's a casual chat room. It doesn't now nor will it ever have the same level of admin as the forum does. We don't have time for that. It's just a sandbox.
Quote:At the very least, I would like Tiberius to explain his standards in administrating slack, and if they differ from how the forum is administered, why it is.
He's not the sole admin of slack, to my knowledge. Moreover, he doesn't have time to spell it out for anyone. It's not just you. He's extraordinarily busy right now. The only reason I have time to respond is because I can play on the forum while I work. Basically, slack is a casual, fly by the seat of your pants chat room. People get booted when they're being assholes as determined by whoever thinks they're being an asshole. You mentioned Hammy. Tibs banned Hammy because Hammy called me a cunt, and it's Tibs' call if he wants to boot people from slack, so he did. I actually disagreed with him, but it's subjective.
For what it's worth, I completely believe your intention was not to offend. I think the best course of action is to accept that, while your intention was meant to make light, someone WAS offended, and needs a minute to cool off.

Oh, and bougie definitely means fancy. Those two need to be careful because calling Tibs fancy is exactly how we wound up married.

You're trying to have it both ways. Slack isn't a part of AF, but a person can be removed from slack based on their behavior on the forum.
And with that, I'm likely out for the next day as I have things to attend to, and this has been very stressful.
Oh, and Losty, I accept that you don't dislike me and are not acting on such feelings, but disliking me for my behavior and opinions amounts to about the same thing. I'm happy to engage you in a rational discussion of the issues, but this seems to me to be something more. And for what it's worth, I told my nurse about my, "Whassup, nigger?" comment and she found it very funny. So while you personally may not find it funny, likely because of political and other disagreements, I think you were simply wrong saying it wasn't funny. And before you accuse my nurse of being someone likely to engage in behavior that is dehumanizing and controlling towards blacks, I suggest you just don't.
I’ve put my foot in my mouth so many times when it comes to race. All I can do is claim ignorance, apologize for my ignorance, and learn something for next time I decide to open my mouth. Honestly, i am always super grateful when people are cool enough to let me know when something I said wasn’t ok, because that helps me prevent myself from making an ass of myself in the future.
I didn’t think your joke was funny at all. But I’m just some white lady and my opinion on it doesn’t matter much. When you make an attempt at a racial joke though, and the only black person in the room says “hey...not cool”. (This is just my opinion again) it then becomes extremely asinine to double down and insist your joke was funny. It makes sense to apologize. Seriously, I don’t think you’re a racist at all. I just think you put your foot in your mouth and you should back up and say “yup I did that, sorry, won’t happen again”. Instead of “how dare you racists accuse me when I have just as much right to say that word as anyone else and my friend says it was funny!!😡” (this is just my opinion on how your reaction looks, not saying that’s actually what you said.)

A white woman uses the N-word and is surprised to find that it's problematic. In 2019.
Wow.

Well shit, now I'm confused. All this time I thought you were a person of color. Color blind internet, I guess.

Slack rukz, and all ya’ll drool!!!
Jk. Honestly, we have a lot of fun and it’s a great, supportive community if anyone is interested. If you drop the N-bomb in a careless way we might spank your ass, but who doesn’t like a good ass spanking?!
I’ve been drinking. Please disregard all of the above.

Haha. People often think I’m Hispanic in person. I think the dark hair and the fact that I speak Spanish does it. I mean, even Hispanic people often think I am Hispanic lol. But no, I’m just white.

I honestly don't care what stripe people are. I'm just a mutt myself, anyway.

Jorm, I know you to be an incredibly thoughtful person. I believe you were just trying to be funny in Slack but you ended up conjuring up a shit storm. As Dave Chappelle demonstrates, the N-word can be funny as hell. But it's risky as fuck to make a joke with it because of how offensive it is.
Sorry about the shit storm. My advice is chill and let it die down.
To me, Slack was boring because people talked about football nonstop. I know you like football, so it might not seem so boring to you, but to me, it's boring as fuck, so I never waded through enough football talk to see if it was a social club or not. And I don't really care. I just don't want you to get all pissed about this and leave, because we need you in the philosophy subforum. Too many passers-by that post stupid shit there, and you offer much clarity.
