How about Jane Lapotaire? Died on 5 March, this year at age 81.
Born in Ipswich to a French woman who abandoned her at birth, she was raised by the same foster mother who had raised her birth mother. She won a competitive place at the local grammar school. When she was age 12, her birth mother made a bid to reclaim her. Lapotaire elected to remain with her foster mother, although she spent holidays with her birth mother and her husband (a Canadian oil worker) in North Africa.
She studied acting at The Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and joined their company. Over the next few years, she performed with the National Theatre Company and the Royal Shakespeare company. She rose to prominence in the title role of
Marie Curie in 1977, and won a Tony Award for her portrayal of Edith Piaf on Broadway.
In 2000, while preparing to teach a course on Shakespeare at the Ecole Internationale in Paris, she suffered a massive cerebral haemmorhage, spent three weeks in a coma, and made a full recovery.
Let’s see Chuck Norris do THAT.
