The cheapest way to reduce firearm violence is to vet better at the time of sale.

I can walk in downtown Brisbane, without even worrying about getting robbed without a firearm. Same in Tokyo. And despite what one may think, they don't ban firearms in either country, they just do a far better job keeping them out of the wrong hands.

It stops at schools. Private businesses can make their own decisions about whether or what kind of security measures to implement. Schools are a little different.

In that scenario, where is the deterrent factor of armed teachers? It hasn't deterred anything.

No It's not a deterrence AT THAT POINT where the little monster is shooting at people. At that point -- having the fastest response possible with deadly force is the best response -- and this is the tactic that a majority of police agencies are now employing.
But they have to travel to get there.
The teachers are already there. And THEY CAN BE TRAINED. Perfect? No. Better in my opinion than cowering and waiting for minutes while the carnage ensues.
Where an armed teacher IS a deterrent is before the shooting. A coward is more likely to attack if he knows all of his potential victims are unarmed. Cowards LOVE those " gun free" signs...

Exactly. Even if we had better vetting at the time of sale, as you very often point out, that isn't going to stop the guns from getting into kids hands, and we'll still want the metal detectors. They already have a guy with a gun in them, the SRO, and it might already be one gun too many. Predictably, an SRO doesn't seem to have much of an effect on active shootings, or any violence at all, in fact. We've dumped millions (state by state) into SRO funding. No relationships have thusfar been demonstrated. Giving the whacked out pot smoking kindergarten teacher a pistol is a downgrade...and are we expecting it to make a difference this time?
