Former JW

RE: Former JW
Welcome.

A good number of my family across NZ and Oz belong to the JW cult.
Dying to live, living to die.

Hi! Sorry you wasted your time as a witness, but I'm glad you got your life back.

My first instinct is to mention that most Jehova's Witnesses seem like very dedicated believers, but I suppose as with any other denomination, there are degrees of loyalty to the cult. Were you pretty deep in, like knocking on people's doors and stuff or just a moderate believer?

Either way, welcome to the forum and to the world of being an atheist. It's not always as comfortable, but it's, in my opinion, a much more honest way to live in concern to the question of god's existence.
If you're frightened of dying, and you're holding on, you'll see devils tearing your life away. But if you've made your peace, then the devils are really angels, freeing you from the Earth.

With JWs, you're not even counted as a member unless you go door to door. But yeah, I was in deep. My husband was an elder, which is the highest rank in a local congregation. I started learning a foreign language to preach to refugees.

@Athena What's the best thing that you've experienced since your departure?

Hi there!

Do you have a good support system? It can't be easy to transition out of a cult Sad

I can write now. I always wanted to be a writer, but I never wanted to have to write according to my religious code. Now, I can write fun stories with sex, cursing, and violence. It's awesome.

Also, Witcher 3. Not the kind of game I'd be allowed to play while in.

Yeah, I made a new friend right after quitting. Now my family goes to her house for most holidays. And, I'm getting to know my non-JW family members better.

I've been married for 21 years to a man with whom I only had one thing in common: religion. Now that we don't practice, we struggle to even like each other.

So he left also? I hadn't picked up on that until now. Sounds like things are going to be tough for awhile.
