It's A Small World After All

RE: It's A Small World After All
Ultimately, any reliance on charity to cover a gap is just a measure of our willingness to subsidize exploitative labor practices.

Socialize the costs, privatize the profits.

I don't disagree that the need for charity indicates a failure of society to care for those most in need.  But until society steps up and does that, then there is a real, immediate need for charitable relief.

Ofc, and something is better than nothing. This is a big issue for the wife and I.

So far as the food lion example, though, it’s typical of a popular grocery scam. They’re offloading excess inventory and donating a portion under markup. We tell people to buy the food themselves...because they can get it cheaper, and then donate directly.

Or, even better, don’t but anything at all, and donate to an organization with a better ratio.

While the iron is hot, a really oblique but highly effective way to help get food to the destitute, is to help food banks purchase or construct cold storage.

Perishables are a huge and healthy chunk of the potential offload that most charities just aren’t equipped to handle.

Food Lion "donates" meals to the community..... Sounds great on the surface. I don't care if they are going to the elderly. And actually, their adds, at least locally, are not mentioning age  in feeding people, where I live.  If giant corporations stopped using "charity" as a PR scam, and actually paid livable wages and paid taxes to fund social security and medicare that old person wouldn't need that "charity", and less people would need food stamps regardless of age.

YES paying a livable wage IS the best charity.

Yes, I read your post.  I always read what you write before I reply to it.  I also make an effort to understand what you're getting at.

I don't see why you have an issue with Food Lion donating food to needy people.  I grasp your point about taxes going to fund social security, but that (increased wages) isn't going to help people that are hungry right now.

And no, paying a livable wage isn't charity in any way, shape or form.  It's fair, it's just, it is ethically the right thing to do, but it isn't charity. If it were charity, Food Lion would pay people $25/hour not to come to work.

You DID completely miss my point.

Yes I used Food Lion as an example, but it would not matter to me what giant entity did this.

McFly! It isn't that hard to understand.

Good tactic in economic reality= PAY LIVABLE WAGES.

Bad economic tactic which is what giant corporations love= Pay crappy wages, then, rather than pay livable wages, make "charity" look like you fucking care.

Again, you're yelling at people who are agreeing with you.

People should get paid what they are worth.

When you force employers to pay slackers the same as the industrious - it fucks the system up.

And don't. Give me " pay the better workers more".

You want to make things better?

Impose a MAXIMUM wage.

When the office drones quit making 10 times or 100 times what the sweatshop workers make - things might improve.

But minimum? ( or it's dressed up cousin - living wage) Count on a whole lotta people being stuck at the bottom.

There’s really no bad idea you don’t like, is there?

Wink

In mere reality, labor is productive as fuck and keeps getting more productive, even though labor wages have stagnated or shrank. People aren’t getting paid what they’re worth to begin with, torpedoing that fun little canard.

If someone isn’t doing their job, try firing them...not using them as an excuse to exploit their peers.

Maximum wage?  Really?  You seem to be expecting people to be happy with, 'No matter how hard you work, no matter how efficient you are, no matter how may good ideas you come up with, you are never, ever EVER going to make any more money than you're making right now.'

But you are fine with increasing the number of people at the bottom......

RE: It's A Small World After All
Minimum wage is about raising up people who’ve been buried under the floorboards, not keeping people at the bottom, lol.

You’ve been shooting right wing meth directly into your eyeballs, haven’t you?
