People don't " attempt" suicide with a gun.
They COMMIT it.

Not everyone who attempts suicide with a gun is successful. My cousin made an attempt in around 2004 or 2005. He gut shot himself with a shotgun. The doctors gave him a pretty slim chance at survival but survive he did. A fair amount of his intestines and colon were removed and multiple holes patched up. He had a colostomy bag for a time. Later the doctors were able to remove the colostomy and resect his intestines. He has since married and had a child, has a good job, and seems to be doing okay.
So...yeah...not every suicide attempt with a gun is successful though I will agree that many are.

I know a guy who fellated a pistol but held it wrong and ended up with his upper lip and nose messed up. He eventually took his old van to a secluded location and ran a vacuum cleaner hose from the tailpipe into the van and gassed himself. I wouldn't use a gun solely for consideration of the people who have to scrape my carcass up and deal with it.
If you get to thinking you’re a person of some influence, try ordering somebody else’s dog around.

Depends on how oblique we’re going with the question.
I don’t think so. While suicide is a terrible occurrence, I don’t think that our best efforts (and considerable political capital required) should be wasted on keeping people who want to die alive.
Children, maybe...but since kids “can’t” get guns cap laws and enforcement of their existing analogs would seem a better target to cut down on suicides, school shootings, accidents involving children, people mistakenly shooting their so in a perceived home invasion, etc.
Focus on the ones that want to live, and the ones who can’t be given leeway to make such decisions for themselves, first. I know, two things at once.....still....we might really need to take this in baby steps considering how poor our efforts to date have been.

I don’t think I’ve posted this on the open forum so here goes...
...about three months ago I tried to kill myself.
Since I didn’t have access to firearms (though I did and still do have access to many sharp objects), I took an overdose of sleeping pills.
Long story short, I obviously survived thanks (?) to the intervention of a friend.
If I had access to a firearm I would have bee far more likely to succeed, or caused myself serious damage if I hadn’t.
Dying to live, living to die.

I was the oldest male available in 1965 when my neighbor blew his brains out in his bedroom. His wife asked me to go in and "check on him." "Educational" was one term for it.

My boss has a friend who did the just about the same thing as far as the shooting is concerned. But he will never be mentally or physically capable of trying another method.

Pretty much what I was thinking. Guns don't cause people to suicide, but they are frequently a means to that end. If a society is serious about reducing suicide rates, counselling and the teaching of coping skills is going to be more effective than attempting to address firearm availability. If the desire to take one's life is removed, then the means won't matter.

If I lived in a country where mass killings were regular, I'd contemplate whether life is even worth living.
So yes, I think there is a connection.
