The truth is most firearm violence starts with a LEGALLY  purchased firearm. It is possible to LEGALLY purchase a firearm then go on to commit a crime after that legal buy. And that is where most crime happens.

Well, that's not exactly true. A study done by the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and Research which surveyed prison inmates convicted of gun crimes found that:

Quote:In the 13 states with the fewest restrictions on gun ownership, 40 percent of inmates illegally obtained the gun they used, Webster said. Only about 13 percent purchased the gun from a store or pawn shop.

In the other 37 states, about 60 percent of inmates had obtained their guns illegally. Not to mention, I actually ran in the streets for a lot of years. The guys I knew weren't worried about going to the local gun shop and passing the NICS background check. Guns were not, and still are not, hard to find on the street (this is part of why we need better gun control, though I'd argue that most of these illegal guns are coming from out of state or from clandestine manufacturers). This is, of course, purely anecdotal, but I think it's worth mentioning.

So, what you're saying is debatable, at the very least. The study did find, however, that stricter gun laws would have prohibited some individuals from being able to own guns in those states where gun laws were considered "looser."

However, that's not really the point. You're preaching to the choir here; we need better gun control in the US. Go argue with someone who actually disagrees with you Brian. Saying that this is a trend with you would be an understatement.

STILL NOT GETTING IT!

Go back and re read the article I did not post. But the Washington post article I DID NOT POST.

Even it says most firearm crimes start with a legal purchase.

Illegally obtained, STILL does not mean the initial purchase was not legal.

Most firearm injuries and deaths START OFF with someone buying a firearm LEGALLY. After the fact borrowing, does not change the initial legal purchase. After the fact using without the owners permission does not change the initial legal buy. It is a myth that most firearm injuries and deaths are a result of theft from a home or shop.

I am sick of the bullshit argument of "legal vs illegal" when it still is an access issue. After the fact unintended use does not change the fact someone went into a shop, or went into  a private sale, and because of our bullshit Swiss Cheese laws, eventually allows people to commit a crime AFTER the initial legal buy.

EVEN THE WASHINGTON POST ARTICLE SAYS THIS. "All guns start out as legal guns".

The only reason I don't try is because far to much of my species is so fucked, and a big minority of greedy fucks, both friend and foe alike, make a practical oasis impossible.

No hope for the future, then?

You say you're sick of the argument, but you're the one who brought it up. All I said was criminals don't care if guns are illegal. If you're arguing that all guns start off being made by legally licensed manufacturers, then okay. Even though are [b]are[/i] clandestine manufacturers. Though they're probably not super common, I know they exist. Regardless, statistics on illegal gun ownership isn't quite the same as tracking a legal gun sale, is it? The stats can get a bit murky in that sense, which is why I appreciated the Johns Hopkins study. But okay...

If you're arguing that most guns that are used in crimes were initially sold to someone legally... I'm not so sure about that. I'd have to see a primary source for the statistics. However, I wouldn't be dumb-founded.

What's your point?

Once again Brian, you're arguing with someone who is on your side. You don't actually seem to be reading what I'm writing. I want better gun control in the US. I'm with you. You're preaching to the choir, dude.
If you're frightened of dying, and you're holding on, you'll see devils tearing your life away. But if you've made your peace, then the devils are really angels, freeing you from the Earth.

You can print guns now, so the legit sources are not that germane if people can get at a 3D printer.
