My argument is that he holds the same pride from the start of the series to the end, and it's never really about vengeance... I think that frustration with his position in life was a large factor, but secondary to the pride that was a part of him his whole life. Sorry, I love the show and have thought about Walt's character a ton lol. It is interesting to discuss his potential psychopathy.
I'm not attacking you, man, I agree with you. I'm not nitpicking anything you're saying, I'm just discussing...
Well, what is the motivating factor behind revenge, if not pride? Pride is the motivating factor, and a major theme in the entire series.
Walt is sick of being under-appreciated, looked over and pushed around. He finally grows a pair and tells his domineering wife to "climb down out of his ass." He builds up his resentment so much when he finally gets a chance he tells Gretchen "fuck you" over lunch as they're discussing Walt's lies to his wife (lies he told because of pride). He begins cooking meth, because he can, and because he wants to, and also to get money for his family, because he thinks he's going to die. He continues his activities behind Hank, and everyone else's, back, until Skylar finds out. And then, he even finds a way to control her. This is all due to pride.
Walt's "revenge" isn't a literal form of getting back at any one person, but rather, he avenges himself by finally "standing up" to the world and doing what he wants, regardless of the consequences. So, sure, underneath that vengeance is pride, but vengeance is certainly part of it. His anger at Elliot and Gretchen. His dissatisfaction with his career and marriage. The way he feels pushed around and belittled by people like Hank. He feels very "beat down" by life and this is something V.G. has mentioned plenty of times. He is absolutely "avenging" himself by "transforming" into this new person, Heisenberg.
You can say Walt went from good to bad. Or you can say he went from inaction, to action.
Chemistry is, after all, the study of change, no?
@Aegon
Also, the theme of vengeance obviously takes place very literally as well, though I don't think I need to go into specifics on that.
If you're frightened of dying, and you're holding on, you'll see devils tearing your life away. But if you've made your peace, then the devils are really angels, freeing you from the Earth.
