Do you have a Jewish family, Tempus? Because the Jews do it for religious reasons but Christians, and then the general public, really latched on to it for pseudo-health (and originally anti-masturbation) purposes.

I fail to see the distinction between chopping off a bit of external male genitalia compared to a bit of external female genitalia, yet the latter would be considered mutilation by many... No gents, don't bother taking the minimal effort required to clean your dick, chop part of it off! The general cleanliness argument seems rubbish to me. The reduced HIV risk I can appreciate, but from 0-13 it's unlikely you're going to get those benefits. Further, not every boy is born in sub-Saharan Africa or HIV high risk areas. There are other lines of defence, like education, condoms, talking to your partner, getting each party to test, and generally not indiscriminately fucking every single thing that moves.

Basically I'm not against the procedure, but I don't think it should be done without consent unless there's a high chance the child will have a poor education.

I'm totally with you, dude. I think it's pretty barbaric. I've been with cut and uncut guys - and all of them were fairly clean-freakish, so there wasn't a damn bit of difference.

You should look up the guy that started Kellogg's. He was an asshole - totally promoted circumcision as a way to stop boys from masturbating.

I'm already aware of that Kellogg's guy, he certainly was an asshole. Unfortunately, as with most assholes, he probably didn't even realise he was one. But yes, I didn't mention the arguments promoting circumcision for the explicit purpose of dulling pleasure... I mean what's there to say? It just seems so self-evidently idiotic. Reminds me of the character O'Brien in Nineteen Eighty-Four saying something along the lines of "We will destroy the orgasm" - very chilling.

I'm aware of no justification for the circumcision of a modern urbanite.

Yes, I'm circumcised.This was routinely done in most Australian hospitals when I was born; mum was told,not asked.

To be honest,it's not something which has ever bothered me.No point; it's not as I can do anything about it.

Possibly, but correlation does not infer causation. So far I have not seen any credible evidence to support your suggestion as a principle.. I'm willing to bet that per capita,there are large numbers of scumbag child molestors who are also atheists.
